Not only are the tariffs stupid - they're politically unsustainable. I think Trump will drop them within a month or two and claim some sort of face-saving victory as the reason he's ended them.

I am just worried for the Mexican and Canadian citizens. Tariffs don't work and this would really hurt them.

I cant believe their leaders knowing tariffs harm citizens are going ahead with the plan to put tariffs on goods.

That said, are you saying if foreign countries have Tariffs on American goods, American Presidents should respond with counter-tariffs even though they know it doesn't work and will hurt American citizens?

It depends on the situation. I can’t see any reason for applying 25% tariffs to Canada and Mexico outside of grandstanding bullying.

A response could be to announce that unlike the American bully they will not harm their own citizens by putting on tariffs that would raise the cost of goods on their citizens.

Its better to let the bully harm his own citizens so he can feel big. To join him in his stupidity only makes the Mexican and Canadian counterparts doubly stupid, no?

How do tariffs work for global brands? Say for instance the UK put 25 percent on all US car manufacturers but ford make UK cars in the UK, do they still pay a tariff, or is purely on imports?
