I honestly don’t think we have played that poorly, especially given we are away, with the crowd practically reffing the game.
Three individual errors lead to nearly every Arsenal chance (two of them for their early goal), otherwise they created very little of note. We had a header saved with an admittedly brilliant strong hand (and some assistance from the crossbar), and a few other openings we should have done better with. We could have genuinely scored one or two with better finishing and/or more luck.
My only real criticism—apart from the defence needing to be less careless in possession—is that we seem to be reluctant to find Marmoush with slide rule pass or over the top lobs, even when he has made a clever run in to acres of space. He appears to be the difference maker tonight, with several instances of world class actions.
I understand we don’t want to unnecessarily expose ourselves to the counter, but why have him make the runs at all if we are neither going to try to find him or pass it to a player in the space he created with the run. To me that indicates it is not a instruction not to pass, but rather a lack of confidence in the players who are weighing up the pass. And that is something Pep can remedy in the dressing room.
All things considered, that half wasn’t actually bad. Nothing can be done about the early error now. But we can go on to dominate and turn it around in the second half.
And I reckon we will.
