Have we done enough in the transfer market?

On paper we have. Remains to be seen how they pan out as most are relatively unknown.

We needed a holding midfielder as top priority, we eventually got one. We needed 1 or 2 defenders, we got them, whether they're ready or not we don't know yet. Next on the priority list and one I thought we'd hold out on until the summer was the need to replace Alvarez, we've done that too. We've ticked off the top 3 priorities but added one straight to the top of the list by allowing walker to leave without a replacement.

Season is a complete write off, top 4 is the only target now, that should be enough business to secure it and it gives us 6 months to bed in the new lads so they shouldn't need it next season.

We've given ourselves every possible chance of salvaging top 4 and being ready to go properly next season.

Considering winter transfers are more complicated I'm happy with the incomings. Only position I feel like we needed to cover which we haven't was right back. Other than that time will tell how successful it was based on if we get champions league football next year.
Very difficult to improve a squad with overseas signings in the very short term. The January window for other clubs shows that this is a very difficult window. No one else has done anything significant. And 2 of City's 4 signings are very young players who probably won't play in the Premier League this season.

Marmoush is imo the most likely to make an impact.

Very happy with Gonzalez and Marmoush as they are straight into the starting 11 level players and in positions we really needed.

The other 4 are more longer term signings which at least suggests some long term succession planning. Whether they’ll turn out to be any good remains to be seen.

Summer needs us to get a top RB and 2 top midfielders and either a new number 1 goalie or promote Ortega and get a new number 2.

I think we can win the FA Cup and finish in the top 4. Getting our defenders fit will make a big difference. If we can get Stones and Dias fit, then Akanji can play right back, and Marmoush can provide the width on the right. Nunes on the right is very weak.

The biggest gambles are the £30m outlays on Reis and Khusanov.

They might become bargains of the century, or struggle in a new country with a faster league.

They’ll both need quite a lot of time to adapt and learn our processes and the build up.

Ederson
Akanji, Dias, Stones, Gvardiol
Kovacic, Gonzalez
Foden, Marmoush, Savinho
Haaland

Ortega
Nunes, Reis, Khusanov, Ake (Lewis)
Gundogan, Bernardo
Bobb, Grealish, Doku (McAtee)
De Bruyne

It's looking better.

The club/support needs to break away from the 'if only X was fit' or 'once X is back we'll be alright' mentality. We've invested in youth and now Guardiola has to start protecting the players that have been in the front line for months and give these young guys their chance. There may be a few more canings before this season is over, but we no longer have the luxury of bringing on players when we're three clear, so get them on the park I say.

Done as well as we could have tbh. Summer will see us almost complete it and 2026 should be the completed version of the side for the following 4 to 5 years

Manchester City has made some key moves during the January 2025 transfer window, although their activity has been relatively subdued compared to some of their rivals. While they did bring in new faces, the club tends to be more strategic with their signings, rather than making splashes in every window.

The most notable signing has been Josko Gvardiol, the Croatian center-back, who adds more depth to their defense. This could be seen as a reinforcement in a key area, considering the team's need for stability at the back due to injuries or rotation in the defensive line.

City’s transfer strategy has focused more on adding quality in positions that may require strengthening, rather than overhauling their squad. Some fans may argue that, given their recent successes and ongoing competition in multiple fronts (Premier League, Champions League), they might have needed to make additional moves, particularly in attack or midfield, where rotation or injury concerns could be more prominent.

It’s safe to say that City has done enough to maintain their competitive edge, but whether it’s been enough depends on how they fare in the second half of the season, especially against a challenging set of competitors.
Fucking hell, it really is an expert at saying fuck all in a long-winded way, isn't it?

We can win it, in the same sense that anyone still in it can win it but you wouldn't fancy us to beat any decent side in a knockout game right now. We've won just 5 games all season against the top 14 sides in the league.

We've made a good start in the rebuild, still lots to do before we're a balanced side though

The criticism would be at right back but we had a lot of problems. 2 senior top quality players at a good age plus 2 for the future is the most we could expect. If you ask what type of player would make the most immediate impact this season, I would have said right back. Nunes is not a right back, neither is Rico. We have been unable to play Akanji or Stones there because the central defenders are always injured. This is the biggest weakness at City I think.
That and lack of legs/poor defensive nouse in the middle of the park. Also could argue ball retention too.

I think we have to accept that Mancheshar Yanited's refusal to spend and buy in panic in January means that yet again, for the umpteenth time in a row they have won the transfer window, while City may be said to have thrown kamikaze sums of money at a problem to try and fend off the inevitable end of their decent run. If we look at it from the City point of view though we have to ask if there is any sense to be made of this: do City have a plan?

Sky Blue apologists always like to dress up disaster in fine clothes and argue that the club has simply bought players they would have bought next summer but for an injury crisis, though it seems that Pep has "lost it", reached for the cheque book and behaved in the only way he knows how - by spending a fortune on 2 young defenders no-one has ever heard of, an attacker only because he's the same nationality as a Liverpool legend and a midfielder just because his dad once worked for City. And has this madness stopped? Or will the inevitable 120 point deduction, $ billion fine and 20 year transfer ban come in time to protect the club from their reckless owners?

What is certain is that the club's claims that they need a bigger squad with a lower average age which will permit greater resting and rotation of players to meet the demands of an increasingly severe schedule are simply an attempt to divert attention from the club's inability to imitate the prudent financial policies of their near neighbours.

We need an elite RB, creative 8 & GK.

2 of KdB, Bernard, Gundo & Kovacic will go.

Questions re McAtee and Nico (unfortunately)

Akanji needs a long R & R and may be vulnerable , John/Ruben need rest, conditioning and too stay fit.

Rodders,Ossy Bobb & Phil have to be brand new.

Jack needs to loose 8 years, become t total and a good dad or find a new club.

Lots of moving parts !!

You’ve not mentioned Grealish, has he left??
He is under-used and often in the wrong position (like a few others), Get him in the right role and he can be a big asset

We’ve done more business than I hoped and expected. As the OP said though, should have been done last summer really but that’s just me being spoiled
