The Album Review Club - Week #192 (page 1292) - 3ft High & Rising - De La Soul

He's not even top 10. Glad Rob had this handy so I didn't have to re-look up who enjoyed Soul-Junk more than him (knowing one who is typing this...), as if "everyone hated it". ;-)

Edit: I see we both liked it about the same, and it certainly wasn't helped not being on Spotify in the US for either of us.
The no Spotify thing isn't a problem if I'm not traveling for work. I was around the week of Soul-Junk. But when I am on the road, as I was last week, it's a pain. I was huddled in a quiet room at this whirling-dervish conference, doing emails, desperately trying to sneak a couple of Housemartin listens via YouTube (which shuts off on the browser if you minimize the window) in while being interrupted by annoying people who wanted to talk about dumb stuff like work, etc. :)

Very little hip hop though relative to the weight it’s carried most of our lives.
Didn't we talk about this a month or two ago? I think it's possibly a much stronger influence in the States and most of us are old English guys with a couple of Scots thrown in which might explain why it's a genre that doesn't occur much.

It's a weird thing that everyone, even if they have an objectively odd take, believes that they are reasonable.

Oh I didn't think there was anything reasonable or even sensible about my OP, apologies if I gave the impression otherwise.

Back to the discussion re. the albums in the list; I suspect there's a degree of self-censorship either conscious or unconscious that probably limits our scope, I would say that's been the case for me at least. I've determined that RT will be the last obvious type of pick I'll do for a while and my next couple will be genres we've not done but that I have a bit of a soft spot for.

Even though I’m a couple of months off from my next nomination, I have been road testing a few albums that I had in mind. A couple I thought, yes, this will go down well but then listening to them in the car, I’ve ruled them out straight away!

Think Ive settled on the artist at least.

I had never heard anything by RT so whilst you may feel like its an obvious pick i would definitely not heard him otherwise

I almost considered swerving last minute and changing my next pick as it feels like it's too similar to what's been done recently. However I genuinely love the album and although it's not obscure I'd love to be able to introduce it to people and hear their thoughts. There's a slim chance you might even like it though it has no banjo

What in your mind is your most unreasonable opinion?
I think I have a difficult time liking music by people I don't like. It's obviously not always true. But it is sometimes true. Thom Yorke, Billy Joel, Mark Knopfler, Marilyn Manson, Cyndi Lauper, e.g. Hard to divorce what I know about the artists from their songs.

Also, I find a lot of prog rock really, really bad on its face.
