The Squad planning thread

If we did go for Branthwaite, or Wirtz, that'd be a big chunk of money. We have quite a few positions to fill.

One option are kids like we've done with the young defenders this winter, but imo they're generally a bit too young. Not quite signings for 'now'.

Are there any more players mid-20s who are good (not necessarily World-beaters) who are currently out of favour, 1 year on their contract etc who we could get in as cheap options to supplement a big money signing?
are we broke or something? lol.

I think it we wanted we could, we are miles away from PSR and losing a big bulk of wage as it stands.

If we go into next season relying on our experienced CBs to stay fit, we are likely to have another shit season.

I doubt Khusanov and Reis are ready to start many games in a title and CL winning team. If we aim high, we'll go for a relatively experienced CB, say 25 yo, and let at least one from Ake and Stones go.

We need proper midfielders, full of energy and aggressive. Kova and Bernie can be rotated, but shouldn't be expected to play every 3 days.

Ha!

Not at all, but I'm thinking possibly 2 keepers as well, maybe 5 or 6 incoming in total. If one or two are anywhere around £100m each, I'm sure we'll want to be 'more careful' with others.
Think I've got my guess at 7 out and 4 in (not inc Doyle in my fantasy squad)

GK, RB, DM, AM

Walker, Grealish, Gundo, KDB, Ederson, Kova, Nunes - hitting the bricks in likely order from 1st team numbers

JWE, Phillips etc also yarded.

I'm less certain Grealish will go - purely because at his age, wage and fee, if I was in charge of a buying club I'd go for a younger option. Not sure who we can expect to buy him.

think we'll take any offer we can get. Pep seems done with him imo

Wouldn't be surprised if we end up with loan offers. I do hope there's a way back for Jack, he's useful when he's on it.
Plenty others the club should move on before him anyway.

Ederson
Walker
One of Stones and Ake
Phillips
Nunes
Kovacic
Gundogan
De Bruyne
Bernardo
McAtee

Unlikely we move all of them though and wouldn’t mind having Stones/Ake and Bernardo back next season if they’re rotated properly.

It confuses me when I keep seeing Bernardo's name in the list of players to move on. He's one man, & he alone can't resolve our midfield deficiencies.

He's contracted to us until next summer anyway, so the only way I see him leaving before then is if his RC is triggered. He's run himself into the ground at City & has been asked to play every position bar RB, CB & Keeper. He deserves to see out his contract, or renew on his own terms.

Totally agree on his usage, it’s a shame he can’t get a proper rest but he has to play based on who’s available. I only put his name out because he’s seemed partially wanting out to go to Spain or Portugal for a while. Not sure if he still feels that way or it was just something that he’s moved on from given our success and his importance, so it’s just silly speculation on my part.

Would love to have him next year if we can strengthen around him so he’s not running a half marathon every week.

I sense a change in Bernardo's demeanour. Since signing his extension, I've heard nothing from him about wanting to leave, & all's gone quiet on the PSG & Barça fronts. Both clubs seem to be building from a foundation of youth, so a 31 year old Bernardo is probably no longer on their radar, unless Barça are still interested if he's free.

IIRC, he's always expressed a desire to return to Benfica age 32 & to end his career there. Regardless, he's been a Superstar for City & an exemplary professional.

People who think we are set at CB because we signed two youngsters are being naive, unless they are willing to swallow multiple defeats vs. our rivals and lack of big trophies.

We were poor in defence vs Real, much worse than last season, even though we had our best defenders on the pitch and Stones did 'great' at DM (imo, he did well for a CB, but we were soft in the middle and couldn't control Real, including in the 1st half).

The idea that two youngsters will replace our experienced CBs and help us win the league or that said CBs will stay fit is wishful thinking. Hope Pep and Viana will address the problem of our aging and injury prone CBs and won't make the mistake from last summer.

dont think anyone is saying give them 30 starts ,but you dont have to strain or rush those back from injury we do have any more or as much. Doubt we sign one and run with the 6 we have.

On another day Real would have scored 5. Our CBs are aging, injury prone, not sufficiently quick. Going into next season with them is poor planning. Rodri was saving our asses last season. This season should be a well learned lesson.

Put Rodri, Nico and Bernardo in front of that defense and we have a repeat of the treble season tie. Our defense this year has much more to do with our suicide midfield setup and poor fitness management than anything.

If Khusanov and Reis get integrated and our veteran defenders are properly managed, we’d just need a right back. Add in the younger defenders getting some opportunities and we’re in a much better place come August.

think if you're wanting several defenders and midfielders in summer you'll be disappointed

I hope you are right, but I think that's wishful thinking. Our defenders from the Treble season are two years older now, suffer more injuries and are arguably slower. Time to move some of them on, preferably those who are least available.
