He very much looks like a defender who’s been coached by Pep and who’s had Walker in front of him as an example.

Pep doesn’t quite coach defenders to get stuck in and put in a hard tackle. Pep defenders have very good anticipation and position themselves in a way that they don’t need to make those challenges. Then on the other hand, Lewis seems to have picked up Walker’s positioning habits, which weren’t the best, but weren’t often punished due to his pace. Lewis doesn’t have that pace to recover like Walker so he needs to adjust to his own speed which is quite average.

Offensively, he’s got it so just needs to be more rigid defensively. Got a new Philipp Lahm on our hands if he can take the next step.

Those are good points

actually I think the best part of his game is when he's further up the pitch and playing in tight spaces, he's a tidy player in those situations, which would be great attributes for a right back if the right back is actually a good defender also, then you would have a hell of a player but the problem is his defensive skills seem to be nowhere near a good right back. if he did play further up the pitch primarily, there's always going to be better players in those positions and that's why I think he's a bit in limbo.

but really when you think about it, it's not that much different to Trent Arnold. He has some good attributes for attacking play but not particularly going to be good enough to be attacking player primarily and he can't really defend either.

Who knows, maybe he'll turn out to be a revelation or find a position where he starts to excel. I'm just struggling to see what it will be but I don't think it's as a right back. It would cause an obvious weak spot in a team.

He’s a right midfielder and that’s where he will make his mark in football, if he does.

He’s not a goal scorer, and he’s not a defensive midfielder, so he’s a classic 8, rather than 6 or 10.

He’s got the engine and ability for the Championship or a yo-yo team, and I think he will develop the strength to be OK at that level. Much as McAtee did well at that level, but hasn’t made the breakthrough at the PL level, so could Rico do consistently well at that level.

Lewis is neither fast nor physical, at least he should have shown some bravery. Kovacic's backpass was poor, but a better defender clears it or fouls Vinicius.

An even better player would have nipped in before Vinicius, got it under control then speared a 40 yard through ball to Haalands left foot to thundercunt a 25 yarder in off the bar for us to win 3-2.

Point still stands though mate, it was a fuck awful needless pass by an experienced player in the last minute of a tie, Rico was a millisecond away from winning the ball.

He's got 4 goals in over 80 games, 3 of them against Palace who for some reason he loves scoring against, so he doesn't really chip in with the goals, and how is he good on the ball ?
Still a decent return. Pep still rates him.

The most you can ask for a defender is not to make mistakes.

Anythinf else they do like goals, assists etc is always extra.

Kept it tidy and things kept ticking.

Didn't put a foot wrong and that's all you can ask for from him, Nico and Khusanov helped him a lot of course but that's the protection he needs.

Much better today - solid performance.

I think there might have been a mixup for the first 10 minutes or so of the game. Rico seemed to drift right into the spot where Marmoush was playing. That got sorted, though, for the remainder of the game.

He played very well, but honestly I think this is the difference having someone who can cover in behind him makes.

He got beaten in behind multiple times like he does at right-back, but Khusanov swept up.

You remove that weakness and suddenly you have someone that makes a big contribution to the team.

I agree, he got caught up field when they broke a couple of times but Khusanov covered for him.

I think he'll end up in midfield as he hasn't got the pace to be RB in this team
