Maybe, I've said plenty of times that it seems that it comes down to how many billionaires are backing you aka the lobbying system. The problem is that if the US election had produced a different result the same system would be seen as a working democracy. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Yes, but that would have been OUR “working democracy,” wouldn’t it, so that’s alright!

On a serious note, MONEY has destroyed the American political system, and with the Supremes declaring $$$ as free speech, it’s hard to know how it will change. Perhaps term limits is the answer, but that is a very, very high hurdle to overcome, not only because it flies in the face of democracy and the vote.

Btw, I’m in favor of term limits, as discussed previously, BECAUSE money has corrupted the system such that incumbents very rarely lose!

Much as I hate Trump & Musk, and believe they’re operating waaay outside the norms, I have to trust the guardrails will hold. If they don’t, then I might have to take to the streets with others to wrestle back what’s left of the democracy we purport to cherish.

With respect, what’s causing the far right to flourish is boredom and a sense of manifest injustice that you (the royal you) aren’t as rich as Joe Blow the Tech Bro, or as popular as that 16 year-old Tik Tocker, or get/got the leg up you think that immigrant from Djibouti got. Of course this is/was always true, but you’re far more keenly aware of your actual and perceived inadequacies because you (again the royal you) encounter them each and every day via the social media you consume.

And the far right has levered every single one of those “imbalances” for its own ends.

No, I don't agree with you. The far right is flourishing because of increasing wealth inequality and for the first time in the post ww2 world we in the west are facing the prospect of each successive generation being poorer than the last.
The mainstream/centrist parties in our countries seem unable to offer a solution to this so the far right offer simple solutions to these complex problems - solutions which I personally think won't work.
I agree that social media is a tool in this.
