Russian invasion of Ukraine

I meant social security spending, I thought your original post was implying that the figure was incorrect?
Yes it’s incorrect. The figures I’ve seen suggest it was £320bn in real terms in 2010 which would be about £210bn back then. The real term spend was fairly static till Covid and jumped up in the last 2 or 3 years for obvious reasons.

Slight correction. 5 of them flew a total of over 600 hours which made scrapping them even more ridiculous. As someone who worked on the programme I know for a fact that the widely described problems with the aircraft were all well understood and would have been resolved within months, and were no more serious than problems experienced by any new aircraft type getting cleared for going into service. It was a purely political decision with the aircraft snags used as an excuse.
I also worked on the Nimrod programme, it was a sad day indeed when they cancelled that programme, and we had to watch them get cut up like garbage.

I was so wrong about Trump. Never thought he’d become the good guy but I thought his desire for relations with Europe would outweigh his need in relation to Russia.

But I was clearly wrong.

We should be very cautious in our dealings as a nation with the US going forwards.
I am totally unsurprised by Trump’s approach. The only slightly surprising thing is how blatant it is and he’s not even trying to dress it up as something other than a total betrayal. I suppose I shouldn’t also be surprised by those posters on here that support Trump’s approach but it’s mostly the Reform leaning ones so it’s par for the course for them.

How is the country going to fund that?

I'm afraid our government are going to do a lot of hand wringing and reluctantly go along with imposing an unjust peace.

We're fucked,as regards giving Ukraine any meaningful help once the US pulls the plug.

Our country implodes when we tax a few millionaire farms on inheritance- what chance they got getting more funds for defence when everyone goes up in arms at every budget.

If we stop being naive and analyze the current situation, cool headed,
I end up thinking it's time for US troops to leave Europe in terms of our own security interests. Sounds mad, but times have changed 180°.
Who's gonna tell em?

We are completely taken by surprise about the pace things are developing. Every hour a new stunning statement comes out of trump's corner and Europe are being hunted from new direction. Guess our "leaders" are in panic about how to react. Next meeting tomorrow.

Yes, you were always consistent on Trump. And discernibly correct, lamentably.

This is starting to feel like an ambush.

At least we have to think the unthinkable as we can't trust them one bit.
The USA is out of control, I have no idea if the people over there are all completely brain dead? What happened to the leaders of the GOP?
US media are not interested as well, it's gone mad.

We need some clear messages and quick, to get our reactions right.

And we need a clear leading structure in Europe that is able and willing to take quick decisions - our big fat problem #1, being ruthlessly addressed by putin and trump.

The whole foundation is shaking. Erdogan to drop off next?

42% of Americans are in favour of supporting Ukraine..not sure if how many are undecided or 58% are not in favour.

It’s an easy sell…

We have our own money problems.
Do you even know anyone or any city over there?
Your taxes are too high and so I’m going to save billions, some say trillions, and give you a big fat tax cut to help with that damned inflation, home prices and the price of eggs!
We are going to cut all fraud waste and abuse, including that going to Ukraine.
If we had Russia as a friend instead of an enemy, imagine how much money we could save on our military!
Mineral wealth & resources…they’re not making em anymore, and Elon needs em!

Oh and “What has Russia ever done to US?!”

And so on and so forth…

And the lemmings jump off the cliff with glee

So it's an easy sell to be friends with Putins Russia over the UK and Europe? That's where Trump is heading. I don't think he realises he can't have both?

Watch and see.

Money talks, even in oh so principled Europe.

There’s this big pie.
Europeans like pie as much as anyone.
Some people want an even bigger pie.
Would Europe like more pie?

I think they would!

You could be right sadly. If only we had some politicians with a backbone? Sad days ahead.
Ahead? I have to stifle the tears now!

Wondering who, how and when someone is going to stand up for the Constitution they all took an oath to uphold?!

The Republican head of the Armed Services Committee has a few choice words for Putin that will make the news tomorrow, so there’s a chance…slim though it may be with the spineless politicians in Washington, too!
