New CL Format Thoughts

Yeah, but it was Ruben Amorim’s Sporting…
I was at that game, we didn’t win it, because we didn’t take our chances, when we were on top in the first half.

Or score the penalty!!!

And we didn’t get a Draw, because we didn’t have a proper RB on the pitch at the start of the 2nd half and gave away a very silly penalty!!!

Ruben Amorim’s involvement in that game, greatly overrated!!!

It was somewhat tongue in cheek!

The good thing about the new format is you are still in it in February if you are shit, The old system is you were out before Christmas or in the Europa League in the new year if you were shit

Look it's crap in any way you want to wrap it up as Champions, It's not the Champions League with the champions of your country that are only allowed to play in, 5th place clubs or Europa League winners or in time it will allow the so-called History Clubs with a free invite pass.

From the first time Manchester City won the right to play in it, Nobody wanted us playing in their piss-pot competition, They hate us and always will because we represent everything they fear in wanting a fair fight,

Yes Manchester City owners want us in the competition and the money it brings, But the fans don't see it as the bread and butter and never will because it is bent and controlled by the so-called elite clubs that don't want us in it in the first place.

In a way I am glad we are out as I don't need to see more games than necessary this season the way it has been going.

We need to concentrate on the next 13 league games and get top 4 as the money is obviously needed. Perhaps win the FA cup along the way but i would not bet on it.

Next season hopefully Rodri back and the new signings bedded in and we may even make more signings that improve us

The competition in the USA concerns me in terms of more games played before the season starts but that is for Pep to manage

What is the criteria for the Prem getting a 5th spot? I had assumed it would depend on us getting into the next round.

It’s the co-efficiency all competing teams in Europe earn, dividing by the number of teams they had to start with, to work out that countries average.

City are the only English team out so far. Still 6/7 left in. As you see in the current table, the nearest challengers, Italy, have only 4/8 remaining. So their wins are worth less because they’re divided by 8, compared to England’s 7, for the average score.

I have a maximum of 9 games left this season thankfully.

You can be truly woeful and make the playoffs. Our CL campaign was nothing short of disgraceful this year and we still had an opportunity to progress to RO16. It’s a decent insurance policy but I think we’ve learnt this year, as have many club, that top 8 is handy.

We were never competing this year though and going through would feel like kicking the can down the road for a drubbing, as defeatist as it sounds.

Overall I prefer the new format, although it does crate a lot of additional games. I think the playoffs should have been 1 leg at the team who finished highest’s ground and the round of 16 should also be 1 leg at the team who finished in the Top 8’s ground.

If United or Spurs win the Europa League do they take the Champions League Spot off 4th or 5th?

Agree. I was strongly against the change thinking it was just more games against dross. But the reality is that the league format gives many more opportunities for games that have something riding on them.

I'd even suggest add more games to the league stage and then 1 leg ties before the last 8 as you suggested. The league was good and it opens up the competition.

No, they scrapped that rule where one country could have a maximum of five teams in the Champions League.

In theory we could end up with seven teams in it next season. If we got the bonus 5th spot. Villa win the Champions League and United or Tottenham win the Europa. With both of them finishing outside the top five in the league.

Whilst I think the new format is fantastic and an improvement on the previous model, I would like to see how it fairs next season when all the top teams can now know what to expect from the lesser seeded teams.

I think a lot of the bigger teams got threw off by the amount of games and the format of the single legged ties and therefore took for granted wins against the lesser teams.

One thing this format has done has created an FA Cup knockout style where the smaller teams are just showing no fear and no holding back for points in other games or aiming for Europa qualification.

It took us, PSG, Real Madrid and Bayern in the early rounds by surprise in particular.

Bit harsh calling City Dross!!! :0)

Hopefully we will be better next year!!

I like the format as it is??

Give it a couple more years before possibly reviewing it again??

But that would mean less money for UEFA.

Too many games.....full stop.

The physical overloading of players - 70+ games per season - is dangerous for the health and condition of players.

Not sure how the new format games schedule can be reduced, but less game will help or other competitions - League Cup - will be junked to academy games.

The xtra cost to fans is now un bearable for so many, unless our club sets admission prices at £1 & £5 and targets young Mancunian families !!
