ESSO Blue

Takes me back to having to go to Hancocks on Bury Old Road in Prestwich to get Esso Blue for the paraffin heaters at home. Long before central heating.

"We had to live in a cardboard box?" ... "A cardboard box?

You were lucky! We lived for three months in a rolled-up newspaper in a septic tank."

One for the FOC's

I think those ads disappeared not long after I was born, but to this day my old man will still randomly go “Bum, bum, bum, bum. Esso Blue!”

We had those dodgy paraffin heaters when I was a kid, the ones that were sort of like a tall triangle shape and would easily tip over and set your house on fire. I can still bring the smell to mind even today. Standing by one on a Sunday night after a bath.

I remember paraffin heaters in winter. The house was so cold we had two or three dotted about. One of my jobs was to carry a gallon can down to Mr Hulse's shop and get it filled. All quite normal back in the 'good old days' when windows had ice on the inside.

No one seemed to give a thought to fire safety, but looking back, it was a real hazard. Those heaters stank, but it was better than freezing. In normal circumstances, only the main living room had a coal fire. Though I do recall having one in my bedroom, just once, when I was very ill.

When boring old farts go on about how great the 'old days' were, I have to laugh, and I'm a boring old fart myself.

It's a wonder we're still alive with all those paraffin fumes mixed with Park fucking Drive smoke.
