Liverpool (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Rico played fine...he's brave on the ball, willing to play progressive round the corner passes, rather than just safe ones He is mobile and gets around the pitch. His reading of the game is good too, nicking the ball on a number of occasions.

His big weakness at the moment is to believe he is stronger on the ball than he is, and an aversion to a % ball, leading to lost possession in poor areas at times. This is being brutally exposed by Rodri's absence and therefore has often led to big chances or goals.

When Rodri is back and (if) Rico keeps maturing, he will be a very good player in this side.
“Maturing” he’d have to grow a foot, put on a stone in muscle and learn to play a position.

He’s nowhere near top 6 level, never mind being part of future XI that want to keep dominating the prem.

A good kid, but has to go.

We played well. They didn’t really do a great deal and were pinned back by us a lot. But just absolutely no creativity in the team at all.

De Bruyne looks like he’s gone and he’s the only naturally creative player we have on the books.

Could be a while before we’re in for the title again if we don’t address that.

Doku was mint until the last thing he had to do. Alexander-Arnold will be waking up with cold sweats tonight thinking about Doku, but there was no end product at all. Not a single chance came from all his amazing work before the final pass/cross/shot.

Nico was decent. Khusanov was brilliant!

Interesting mate. I commented similarly (in a round about way) in my first post match post.

For me, if Pep wants to stick to the tried and tested style we need to replace Kev, Gundog, Walker, Stones and Kovacic with the “new” version of each. Replicate them.

Otherwise, we do need to change the style and like you say, change to a side who wins games not just through control but through killer transitions, or balls over the top, or through set pieces.
Tend to agree and it's noticeable that Lewis really adds little in terms of creativity . Neither Nico although early days and he passes short and accurate but with KDB Mike's off it, Phil poor and Marmoush poor then all that supports ghe points you're making

Today really exposed the lack of characters on the pitch.

At the start of the season you'd say the main players we can rely on are...

Walker
Dias
Rodri
Silva
Foden
De Bruyne
Haaland

Half of them didn't start and the other half have become invisible.

Watching today felt like watching an
academy match. Lots of talent but no conviction.

One thing that's really hindered us is having no fixed partnerships on the pitch. No consistency at FB or CB. No consistency in midfield. We've even rotated the keeper.

Massive summer ahead.

Has Pep give up.
They didn't have to win that game it was just gifted to them.
Two totally inept and gutless performances in one week with the Son show coming on Wednesday.
Only silver lining is our best players ATM seem to be our new players.
4th and fa cup seem way off on current form.

If people think normal service will be resumed next season they're in for a rude awakening. Even with Rodri back and Haaland playing today we seem to be lacking in a few areas.

With Rodri and Haaland in the team we'd have won the game today. They are for us what van Dijk and Salah are for Liverpool. They are our best players by far. Imagine Liverpool without VVD and Salah. They wouldn't make the top 4.

I thought we played OK, today. It was down to fine margins. If Marmoush stays onside then we are back in the game. Marmoush should have also squared it to Foden when he shot.
Liverpool did not look great but took their opportunities.
I honestly don't think we are a million miles away. We need full backs and a replacement for Kev.
The fact that Doku, Savinho, Nico and Khus were our best players today, gives me some hope for the future.

Sadly Haaland has not done much so far vs Liverpool

Not long back from rain central with different emotions. We kind of played ok at times, young lad at the back did well. We also did well getting stuck in to win possession but, and here’s the thing, we are so slow at getting the ball forward they had everyone behind the ball, KDB can’t even make basic passes any more and I’m not convinced Foden gives a shit. Marmoush was the only player who looked like scoring and when he got the hook I knew the gig was up. Unless Big Erl is back I can see the same happening at Spuds. Anyway fuck it, they’ll never win four in a row !
I thought we were competitive with good energy levels. With KDB and Phil Foden in midfield the big disappointment was the lack of big chances we created. That said, who was their target?

One of the more ridiculous comments I've read on here all day, and that's saying something.
He's not wrong though.

Our corners are the worst in the league. Way over hit. Easy catch for the keeper or fail to beat the first man.

No one makes a run or tries to confuse the opponents, or blocks defenders.

Our set piece coach needs fucking off!!

Wolves caused them more problems than us, we have no killers, no intensity and had no idea how to beat them
We look like exactly what we've become, a side trying to get in the top 4. Not a top team, not a challenger, just another team. The reasons for it have been, and can be debated forever and a day. The upside is that as a club we're very well positioned to rectify the teams shortcomings. I don't think a lot of what's happened on the pitch this season will be at all palatable to some at the club.

This summer he will have to decide with Viana how we're going to play, as key players will need replacing and they've got to be a near perfect fit. I don't think we've got the players anymore to play as we have but I also think the game is moving on. Peps always made changes to keep ahead of the curve, he hasn't changed things up in about 3 years now and our style looks dated and teams seem comfortable in how they set up against us now. he's got to adapt to get us back on top.

But that's the summer, right now hes got what he's got and the way I see us this season is he's got his idea of what he wants and then he's trying to find the best options to fit that plan which is resulting in consessions made all across the pitch with players trying to do something that's not ideal for their game. I don't believe that's the way to go, he needs to get his best players in their best roles and come up with a gameplan tailored to get the best out of their strengths. Right now, we're a squad that could be devastating in a fast tempo direct attacking team. You put the likes of doku, savinho, haaland, marmoush in the dippers side and they'd be frightening.

The players are not go9d enough...they previously were but some now too old and the new ones are not cutting it ...therefore the system makes little to no difference at the moment...there is no system for the mix of players that are available
Kdb - finished
Gundo - finished
Sav - prodpect nothing more
Doku - brave but no end product
McAtee - prospect
Foden....no clue what's happening with him
Grealish - always overrated and no future here.
Marmoush - can he step up...going to have to improve a lot
Kovacic - always been a step below
Bernardo- 50/50

Nico out of all is the only one of be comfortable saying that he inproved our midfield and should be playing next season...obviously with Rodri

In midfield the lads who are finished we move on...but the quality that is left us also questionable

Then you have the problems defensively

Rico...not good enough anywhere
Dias...starting to show signs of weakness
Ake - finished
Stones - finished.
Gvardiol....very inconsistent
Walker - gone
Khusonov - has a future eith us

Then there are other prospects.....Bobb, Echeverri.....but they are only prospects

Besides Rodri, haaland and Dias, we are lacking assertive leaders as well
How's the pies?
