Did we not, ? Think we did, until towards the end when we used Stones as a centre back stepping into midfield instead.
Nope, when we started that monster run to the treble from February we didn't use Lewis at all, it was either 4 centre backs, or Walker at RB, Stones of course was used in that hybrid role.

The 20/21 season Cancelo was widely regarded as one of the best full backs in the world for his inverted full back performances.

I know it’s become fashionable in recent years to ignore everything that Cancelo did at City but our success in that particular season owed a lot to Cancelo. He was performing at a level that Rico can only dream of. In fact, if Cancelo hadn’t performed so well in that role, the inverted full back would arguably have ended up in the bin and Rico might still be looking for his City debut.
Yeah, fair.

Rico’s emergence did end Cancelo’s career with us though. The game against Chelsea away when Walker and Cancelo were both dropped started his head loss that accompanied his departure.

I always maintain that Cancelo finished his own career here. I liked him as a player but his attitude stank the place out when things weren’t going his way. Any normal minded player would have taken their medicine when dropped and worked their way back into the side. He was by far the most talented full back (RB or LB) we had at the club and he wouldn’t have been out of the side for long. He was a fucking idiot. He paid the price then. We are paying the price now.

It was working well at the start of the season. Rico was even POTM wasn’t he?
Yes, seems ages ago now. Thing is he’s had to do it since then with a rotating cast trying and in the main failing to play the 6 next to him. No surprise it’s been difficult and probably confidence sapping for a young lad.
Think next season he’ll be more back up to an experienced full back hopefully with Rodri. Then we’ll see what level he reaches. Either way the inverted fullback that Pep has used for years with great success not just with us, isn’t going anywhere.

His departure may well have won us the treble too though.

Give him his due he bloody tries. As a second choice full back he will be a good servant to the club and payed handsomely well, unfortunately he just lacks the physicality and pace to be at the required level.

He‘ll be ok. 1st choice right back next season.

He did okay in spells. His positioning seems to be better lately.

it was his fault for the corner that they scored from though.

And I didn’t like that he kept pulling his face and flipping his arms in the air when Khusanov passed the ball to him because he was the one not concentrating.
Even I’ve seen from the few games we’ve seen of him that Khusanov likes to play a quick first time pass forward, and he’s good at it, they train with him every day so should be expecting it.

Think some of you Rico haters need to dive into his stats, he's scored more goals for us than roque Santa Cruz and played more than Darren huckerby!!

34 appearances this season, pep loves him

I think the main weakness is that he dwells on the ball too much. The pass to be made is pretty obvious but he has to weigh up two dozen alternatives before making the obvious one. He's demonstrated this aspect of his game since he came into the first team, and it should be a trait that's disappearing, but it isnt'. And occasionally his dithering gets him caught like it did today. How many time did the Dippers just hoof it out of their half. It might not be the Guardiola way but sometimes the occasion demands it.

I saw what you saw and stated my problems with Lewis early on with BM after his first season. You could just see it if you cared to look, but I got slated big time. "He's a Blue!" Sure, no doubt, but he had a limited amount of quality per season.

I think I said his limit was around 10 games before we started to see the errors. He doesn't seem to learn or play differently to his younger squad days. Playing there is different to playing in the main squad, but many City fans thought he could be the same way. Not me. Very very few players can do it and he's not on that list.

After today, I'll go back to not making comments about his game, now most others on the board have caught up.

He's a master of no position on the pitch to stake a claim for and that, in itself, gives us problems.
