President Trump

I think if you read a meaning into something but the original does not say that, it is reasonable to suggest that words may be being mangled. In SCOTUS’ case it is doubly true as elsewhere they claim to be textualists.
On the contrary, reading a meaning that is reasonably implied by the text is exactly one pf the ways SCOTUS is supposed to interpret the constitution.

Textualism applies when the Constitution outright states one thing, and some are trying to argue for something else because they don't like it. That wouldn't be sn issue here...

SCOTUS over the years has at different times outlined interpretative principles for interpreting the Constitution:
Text, framer's intent, Structural Considerations, Practical Consequences and Consistency with Precedence, being 5 of the most important of those principles...

I believe Framer's intent and Practical Consequences were the principles at play in this case.
But this is all dancing on a pinhead: you are right that my remark was light hearted.
I don’t think SCOTUS will prove to be Trump’s lackey as much of what he is doing is an attack on the judiciary in his attempt to raise the Executive above the other co-equal parts of governance. We will have to see whether they err on the side of backing the judiciary, I hope and believe there is a fair chance they will.
I don't see it this way, but i understand how why you do.

Okay! Time to go get sad or happy :)

Right, here goes.

Firstly, I would like to unconditionally apologise for my open, full support for Trump.

To be clear there are aspects of him that I still admire (maybe thats a bit strong) as I do like any Politician that does as they say they will do, and like him or not that is a trait (not quality) that Trump has. However, how he has executed what he is doing is totally and utterly disastrous. I must admit his megalomaniac behaviour is totally unacceptable.

I wish our politicians would stop, as they regularly do, kicking every difficult issue into the long grass and failing to answer direct questions, however I am thankful they are not behaving in the way Trump is at present. There has to be a happy medium but I regretfully believe we will not see it in Trump

I genuinely believe we are very close to the edge of WWIII.

There, now you have it - go fill your boots and have a massive pile on.

No pile on from me, I think we'd all like our politicians to do what they say they will do. Happy to see you now recognise there is a right way and a wrong way to go about that

Fair dues to you BigJoe.

It's happened to me too. I thought Brexit would lead to a better place for the EU with the UK voting out but revoting to stay. And that would serve to stop the federalist direction it was going. I was way off.

All most of us want is not to be right but to be decent imo.

Which would you ‘prefer’, if it was a one or the other scenario?
American Civil War or 3rd World War.

Thats a strange question, there's only 1 answer that anyone outside of America could give, and tbh there's probably a fair few inside america that would also give it.

Does beg the question what would the rest of the world do in the event of Civil War II

Russia are militarily compromised, we (as in Europe) would have an awful lot to thank Ukraine for. China are the other big super power, but despite their ideology, they are rarely (in recent history anyway) the aggressor. I'd think it far more likely they would double down on the economic front. Taiwan would probably be fucked though.

Would Europe get involved?

Would Russia and China get involved more to the point, and the answer is most definitely yes.

With trump as president, almost certainly not. It would be a stiff, you made your bed now lay in it.

‘Strange?’, maybe but I just thought I’d put it to BigJoe after his confession.
It is something I have brought up previously as a hypothetical, yet not now, too far fetched or improbable a possibility.

As a discussion opener, it’s caused you to raise a few interesting questions yourself.
I honestly have no idea.
I suppose I personally think they’d be left to get on with it themselves.
I hadn’t really thought of what it would embolden China to do, or Russia for that matter.

It just shows the global turmoil Trump and the uncertainty he generates has caused in the space of a month.

Why would we have a massive pile on? I personally am glad you’ve reached this conclusion; I hope others who once supported him also do, and those who change their views support those unaligned with him in 2026 and 2028 so we can move back to relative (albeit clearly imperfect) stability in government and government affairs.
