When you're given automatic entry to a single-game shootout through having won something else, you aren't winning another trophy - you're winning another match...

European Super Cup exactly the same.
It's not automatic entry though is it.
You have to win the league or the cup to be in it ?

FA Cup 5th round at Maine rd. Was on the Kippax for this. Plymouth brought a big away following.
Remember a load of their coaches parked up at the big old pub on princess road (?) on way to match.

Paul Stewart uses his elbow to knock out their centre back in opening minutes ,gets a yellow, prob a straight red nowadays ...a scruffy match,Tommy Tynan the legendary lower league striker and record Plymouth goal scorer gets one back.

We put a lot of goals past Steve Cherry that season in 3 different competitions.....but Cherry got his revenge a few years later ,playing for Notts County in the fa cup match against us at Meadow Lane...

The Princess...away coaches parked opposite on hough end. Regretted it many times.

Home Park packed to the rafters for 1st leg of semi final 1974 LC
You can hear Helen's Bell loud and clear just before Tommy Booth scores from the corner.
Bell Marsh Buzzer and Law attracting a capacity crowd at Plymouth..
Same season we got turned over by second division Forest in the fa cup....and same season we sent utd down few months later,.

Those were the days

I would start pretty much the same team that started against Spurs, with no Champions League we only play one game a week and have no need to rest players, the more games that team play together the better they will be, and this game is a big chance for that front 4 to build a some confidence together.
Those players looked fucking exhausted on Wednesday, rest is exactly what many of them need. Several years of hi intensity league winning exhaustion

Bog rolls being thrown on the pitch brings back some memories.

The state of the pitches back in the day, probably the game would be canceled these days.

All right, question from a clueless Yank. Why were English pitches in such bad shape back then? Seems like lots of the old highlights I've watched you can tell the pitch is some degree of torn up.

I think in those days the pitches were just natural grass, which would soon turn to a mudbath as the weather deteriorated, whereas these days they are a synthetic mixture of allsorts. I could be wrong, just a guess.

They are natural grass mixed with polypropylene thread. Grass Master is the trade mark.
