Gig Prices

Just paid 55 quid for an all day rock festival with 5 very very good Swedish rock bands. Will be a cracking day. No chance I'd pay to see anybody "big" these days. 200 quid? Fuck that.

Yes I have read this kind of stuff before, in fact a YouTube female singer with heaps of followers did a tour of England with a backing band. She made a YouTube video about the whole thing and even staying in cheap digs and all in a van she lost a few grand.

I was pretty gobsmacked when I saw McCartney last year and tickets were $95.. about just under 50 quid for a 3 hour show. He was onstage for the full 3 hours. Even when the band took a break he did a few acoustic numbers.

I remember reading a blog post from Fish where he broke down all the costs, and that was similar to the YouTube. He was taking financial risks, every time he toured, and wasn't making much money at all.

Looking at the costs involved in touring, I can understand why there are so many gigs in the £30-40 range, which would have been £20 before Covid.

However, I do believe that the biggest artists are making money from touring. Neil Young will easily be getting seven figures, and possible a lot more from that one gig that started this thread. There's just no need for the £150 Arena prices we see these days, or for stadium tickets to be £200+. I'm guessing you're in Canada, but I remember reading an article recently from over the border, which said that the US promoters and ticket agents had identified the UK as a market that was primed for gouging. They'd put up US prices to some eyewatering figures, and saw the UK as being the easiest target for pushing up prices - and they're certainly having a good go at it.

I paid £130 for a 3 day festival in Portugal last year. They've had Massive Attack, Arcade Fire, Florence and the Machine, Artic Monkeys, Blur, LCD Soundsystem as headliners in the last few years.

This year I think they've scaled back a bit, but have Pet Shop Boys, FKA Twigs, Scissor Sisters, Flaming Lips, Jorja Smith and loads more, and first release tickets were £58! Not sure what you'd get for that price in the UK, but half those acts would charge a lot more for a single gig!

Exactly mate. Probably pay for your flight out of the savings and you're not sat in the fucking Coop.
