Our right back is basically a midfielder for 60% of the game.

But I sorta agree with you, he will likely just be a utility player to fill both spots.

Is seemingly always fit.

I have a feeling that you are someone incapable of nuanced thinking, or you are being deliberately frivolous.
At no point have I said that he is as good as Rodri, nor KDB.
To do that, I would need to have seen Rodri when he was 20, playing in the third-tier of Spanish football, or Kev when he was playing for Genk.

There can be all the context in the world, but if the performances on the pitch aren’t at the required level, then it’s not a sustainable situation in anything other than the very short term. In this context, over 80 appearances isn’t what I would categorise as the very short term.

Yes Rico might improve - but he's shown no signs of doing so. Every time he takes the pitch he's the weakest link in our side.

Not true, in fact in his first season a couple of games he was one of our best.This season has been difficult for him. Lets wait and see how he develops next season, which is what we wil be doing.

Couldn't disagree more. Every single game in which Lewis starts he's
* very tidy on the ball with high completion percent
* can't cope with pressure
* can't defend
* very poor in scoring positions
* does not make killer passes forward
* does not read the game - fails to move into open passing positions (he's often covered or forms a line-of-three instead of a triangle) and fails to anticipate threats as a defender

Disagree all you like, just go back to some match reports from last season when he played, or even the treble year. He's played more minutes and bigger games than any other academy player since Foden, so Pep and the coaches are obviously seeing things you aren't. That's okay though it's Pep Guardiola, he he often sees things most of us can't.

Lewis is playing pretty much as a last resort. Now that Nunes has shown signs of being an OK-ish RB, Lewis is playing less.

And even if you disagree still - watch the next game Lewis plays - closely focusing on Lewis. Watch his movement when we have the ball. Is it good? Or is he often unaware that he's covered or that he's in a line-of-three and thus should move, but does not?

Watch Lewis on defense. Is he good? Does he read the game? Does he charge forward into an attack when he has ample coverage behind him? Or instead, does he simply back up?

What about defending crosses? Is Lewis good at that? Watch the next game he's in and decide.

Or on set plays when on defense. When he's picked by an opponent - obviously blocking his progress - does he figure out what's going on? Does he fight the pick moving to cover an attacker coming in for a pass, currently not covered b/c the attacker is several yards outside the box?

Progressive forward passing. Is Lewis good at that? Or is it mostly safe non-threatening passes?

What about in front of goal? Does Lewis deliver good passes/crosses or shots on goal?

If you somehow think that Lewis is a good or up-and-coming player with potential - I honestly can't believe that you've taken time to watch his play.

You can have your opinion of him , that's fine. I have mine and that's Lewis is a good inverted full back when playing with a pivot thaat understands the position, no coincidence his best games were with Rodri and Nico against Newcastle.
What is wrong to say is everytime he takes the pitch he's our weakest link, that is just not true.

There is always a weakest link. Which player instead of Lewis is the weakest link when Lewis takes the field?

Lewis is playing less because he's probably physically knackered, it's actually a testament to the lad that he's very rarely (never?) injured given all the minutes he's played. Not that I expect his haters, who have long made up their minds, to give him a shred of praise.

I give praise where praise is due. Hell - I'd love for Lewis to become world class and have a run of excellent games in our side. Every City fan would love to see him succeed. Me included.

I'm simply reflecting on what I see on the pitch.

No - just watch the next game. Focus on Lewis. Obviously you won't get the camera angles and full view of his play - but if you focus on him - keeping in mind my criticisms - you'll be able to form an unbiased view.

One caveat is that if the game you watch Lewis is one where he's not under pressure - well then, yeah, he's going to perform well. Watch a game where Lewis starts against a top side that's not going to park the bus.
