The Album Review Club - Week #195 (page 1310) - A New World Record - ELO

A selections a selection whether it resonates with you because it was your Nan’s sisters aunties best mates funeral soundtrack or simply because you fancy giving something else a whirl, or even cause a bit of a rumble ala Radiohead.

Either way , I don’t care as long as I got a album to stick on for a week.

Sure, but all that on the assumption you have actually listened to it. Rather than a random reach into the bargain bucket at Lidl pick.

All good points and everybody correct in their own way.

Yes, this thread was set up for people to pick albums that mean something to them, but I think I have said all along that people have free choice on what to select. Didn’t somebody even pick a best of at one point?

But I’m tempted to agree with @Coatigan that surely it should be an album that you have at least listened to.

I’m still eager to know what southamptonblue’s take on this week’s selection is. I’m waiting for him to drop the bombshell that he hasn’t heard it yet.
What made this thread work (for me at least), is the initial premise that an album should mean something to the nominator and the reasons why described. For the most part that has been followed and I can see no reason why we shouldn't stick to that format. I get pleasure from reading some of the write ups which are top quality and give a personal insight into why the album is loved. The fact that I haven't enjoyed the last couple of albums is neither here or there and explains why I have spent the time I have available enjoying the history thread which has been utterly fascinating. It would be even better if more of you participated in it if you have the time.

Just out of interest I looked at the table on page 1 of this thread to see if most albums fell in the sweet spot of the age profile on here. Although, as expected the 70's and 80's are the most popular decades, the number of nominations from the 2010's and 2020's way outnumber those from pre 1970. So we are seeing a very good spread of music from the 70's onwards.

Not unusual when a new guy appears in an old sub :)

Didn't happen when I appeared :-) We've even adopted a likeable dipper who didn't cause aggro !

More seriously I am looking forward to your first nomination and a bit of mixing it up.

I'd quite like to know what Richter you're considering (I've got a couple in mind that I think could go down pretty well overall) but thinking out loud sort of defeats the point. If you go for something like a Jon Hopkins album I suspect the score won't be all that but the discussion will be good with a subset of people, a bit like the Domenique Dumont that Goat put up.

In the interim, do try not to get yourself thread banned ;-)

I don't care about thread bans tbh. The other fellas attitude is out of order. That's his problem not mine.

Back on topic, regarding Max,
I'm spinning "Spaceman" a lot at the moment. Not an album i would put up here as it's a bit too left field, however it's a superb ambient piece.

I don't have an attitude mate. Just an aversion to arrogant posts. You said it wasn't intended the way it read so lets agree to leave it there.

Worth noting this thread isn’t strictly for selections to be based on what’s personal to you and sentimental etc although that seems to be the case for vast majority of picks - can pick whatever the hell you like for whatever reason - I’m tempted to go with an Album I’ve always been interested to listen too that I never have next time.
I bet there are thousands of albums I've never listened to that I wouldn’t mind giving a go. Sort of like a reaction video!

But I don't think this is the thread.

I don’t get much time to listen to music nowadays and when I do it’s the selected album on here - so might be only possibility to fit some I’ve always wanted to hear on here.

I said you were mistaken and you've carried it on.

Like i said, you've a chip on your shoulder not me. "Mate"

Anyway, I've no wish for you to continue to gaslight me into a thread ban so I'll leave it be.
Hopefully you'll do same.

The thread OP is clear i think.
It at least requires that you should have heard an album before submitting it.

I was considering doing a very new album as my pick but listening to it for the 1st time myself to join the subs journey with it. However, i think that's a no go.
I was going to pick a new album to try and get contemporary music into the list.

Back on topic. I really don't want to be as cynical as Bimbo and Fog (no offence intended gents!) but in trying to understand a bit more what the fan base like about the band I'm coming round to their conclusion a bit.

There's a separate website to the official one that claims it's 'by the fans, for the fans' but it strikes me as extremely corporate and not very fanesque at all. Overall there seems to be at least as much emphasis on, and directing to, the 'lore' as there is the music and to the extent the music is discussed it's in relation to the lore. I get the impression that the fans see it all as a bit of fun which is fair enough. You'd assume it would collapse in on itself when people decide there's not enough of substance to sustain interest. Either that or it'll start to become weird and unhealthy.

Two things can exist at the same time. The album can be good but the band not so.
