The Album Review Club - Week #195 (page 1310) - A New World Record - ELO

as I'm soothing myself with memories of Leslie Ash now.
I expect that there are a fair few on here who have also "soothed themselves" to leslie Ash!
Oh. I also hate that the artist has a name, sort of, and the rest of the band has numbers. And fucking ROMAN NUMERALS at that. There has never been any band that employed Roman numerals in any context that wasn’t pompous as fuck. When you name BAND MEMBERS after them, you have reached the true PINNACLE of pop-posity.
Indeed, Mutley, The Beater, Chorley the Hord, Stez Styx are far better.

Another listen of this and I'm afraid its not getting any better, Whilst I got Eurovision vibes from this I also got manufactured. I started having images of them being created for an episode of Miami Vice.
the devious record company ripping off the fans and creating the hysteria for the band yet the poor naive, sincere lead singer had bought into the whole thing.
We later find that "the lore" around "Sleep" has been created to distribute a new drug, with the touring kit being used to transport it.
Tubbs & Crocket stare out from the side of the stage at all the mindless kids worshipping the masked singer as the Europap plays on.
Later we see the obligatory speedboat chase with Crocket and Tubbs looking off into the distance, wind in hair as "The Summoning" plays us out.
Hopefully I will be in a good mood later on this afternoon and that may help me be more charitable...whilst i am assuming you lot will be digging out anything black & white.

Back on topic. I really don't want to be as cynical as Bimbo and Fog (no offence intended gents!) but in trying to understand a bit more what the fan base like about the band I'm coming round to their conclusion a bit.

There's a separate website to the official one that claims it's 'by the fans, for the fans' but it strikes me as extremely corporate and not very fanesque at all. Overall there seems to be at least as much emphasis on, and directing to, the 'lore' as there is the music and to the extent the music is discussed it's in relation to the lore. I get the impression that the fans see it all as a bit of fun which is fair enough. You'd assume it would collapse in on itself when people decide there's not enough of substance to sustain interest. Either that or it'll start to become weird and unhealthy.
Errr, my review wasn’t cynical at all.

Agreed.
I found it odd that the last album was posted by someone who wasn't the nominator.

The nomination gets it's validity from it's context i feel.
(I've been busy this weekend, what did I miss???)

I'm not going to spoon feed this, but I believe the last nomination was posted by the actual nominator. It had pictures and everything, IIRC.

I'm also considering an album for my pick which was only just released. I'm unsure as to wether this is a good idea lol.
That's not been done before, so bring it on. ;-)

BTW, the record here currently is a whopping 194 days since a release by someone who has only nominated selections from this century, so make it count if you do.

Faith no more: The real thing was a nomination by Bimbo bob, but actually posted by Rob

At first i thought Bimbo was Robs burner account.

No idea what that was about if not.

Rob spends time runnung the thread, sometimes when posters have a timing clash on the Wednesday when albums change over, or aren't available, they PM Rob their selection and write-up, clues etc. Rob posts them on their behalf. At the expense of himself missing out on guessing the album or the surprise element. Thought it was kinda self explanatory, but perhaps to us because we are used to it.

And I'm sorry if I had a chemo visit at the hospital. Must try harder!

Bit of an edit...a 10 minute chemo visit...followed up by an afternoon at Leicester Uni preserving some Roman coins.

Ah.
I get the idea, sounds a bit unnecessary in todays age of eternal internet and mobile hense my confusion.
Still, good show from Rob.
Thread husbandry can be a PITA.

OK....I HAVE listened to this album, but no, I don't particularly like it. It is not a 'wind up' or 'Clarkie' at all, it's a genuine nomination to see what other people think, here's the deal.....

Sleep Token sell out Arena tours, and could easily sell out more Arena dates, this album was voted 'best rock/metal album' of 2024, and they are headlining Download Festival, this summer! They are massively popular, not obscure.

The fact that they are headlining Download, has caused alot of 'debate' in the world of attendees at that festival....between the 'they are not rock/metal' 'not good enough' 'no way I'm going now' FOC types, and the younger fans of theirs, who are so 'religious cult' like, that they make Dipper fans sound normal.
I listened to this, intrigued as to how they sounded, would I like it? Being a fan of rock/metal, I thought I would (I was wrong) so i wondered if I was missing something.....and thought I would see what a group of 'neutral' reviewers, ALL OF YOU, thought. I am/was aware that certain posters would not like it, but then that is no different to anything I have nominated ;) ...and I had to listen to 'The Streets' which isn't even remotely music!!
Sorry, but what 'attachment' I have to an album, or anyone else has to their nominations is totally irrelevant to what any of us think of them.....it's simply a chance to listen to music that we haven't heard (mainly) and maybe find something new, that we do??......it's not a competition after all, and having to listen to 'Definitely Maybe' which even my 80yr old parents, who don't really listen to music, have heard, imo is a much bigger waste of time! My first hope every week, is that I've never heard of the band .
Sorry, some have shown their 'wetwipe' side ;)
I will stick with Dark side of the Moon, Thriller, and the best of ABBA in future.

There was nothing in that in any way aimed at you as a dig pal. Like, at all, honestly.
