There's now a list of people in my head who have claimed that we've already won that have tanked their credibility. They weren't passing info in good faith, they were vying for attention. Two of them specifically also happened to be attempting to bring in money and I'm sure their social media posts helped their various campaigns.

No. As a journalist you have three choices when reporting on this when you don't actually know anything or have any news:
1) say nothing, because you know nothing.
2) make up a story about city being innocent.
3) make up a story about city being guilty and getting relegated, stripped of titles etc.

In terms of generating clicks and sales 3 is the obvious choice.
