The in drink is a 'long black'.

It's the aussie way of making a black coffee. It beats an Americano hands down. (So they say)

You pour a double espresso into hot water.
 
Exact same ingredients, different outcome. The long black preserves the crema.

Generally, the long black has more of that distinct espresso taste, whereas an americano is smoother, like brewed coffee but with the depth of espresso.
Shouldn't be I've been making Americano's for 20 years the 2 Espressos should always go on top of the water to preserve the crema. If your Coffee shop isn't change coffee shop.

A proper Americano has the espresso in the cup first, and the hot water is then poured over the top, mixing and diluting the espresso.

The Long black has the water in the cup first with the espresso poured over the top. You get more of an initial espresso hit with a long black, and it's the act of drinking that mixes and dilutes the drink more slowly.

It certainly doesn't only a badly made Americano.The coffee should never ever go in before the water.A true Americano is made the way you described the long black
 
I'm going to be the resident coffee pedant here and point out that americano refers to a specific drink of a shot of espresso diluted with hot water, not just any black coffee. I.e a V60 is a different drink to an americano, even though they are both long black coffee drinks.
I'll pedant right back at you and note that i wasn't calling black coffee an Americano, just identifying an example of one such drink.
I'll double up on the pedantry and tell you that an americano can also be white. :)

Erm.

A "long black" in my region is where the customer wants you to "go long" on the extraction.
So pull the double espresso but keep on chugging until the cup is full.

Over extraction ftw.

The true origins of the Americano (as far as I'm aware) from GI's in Italy asking for coffee and being handed an espresso and then having to dilute to taste with hot water. Either way, different in flavour and feel to the long black.
 
No No no, it's completely different.
For a start the long black is made in Australia whereas the other version, which is not nearly as good is made in America.
It was made in Italy. A long black is just another name for the same thing ,actually more New Zealand than Australia. Come to my coffee shop, and any good coffee shop and ask for an Americano any you will get hot water poured and then 2 espresso shots on the top. Can’t believe people are accepting coffee shops that put the espresso in first then add hot water on top.

Coffee obsession is a terrible thing, I know people who spend £20 a day buying coffee, but a jar of Nescafe costs a third of the price, and lasts for two weeks. I only drink coffee occasionally, so I am relatively rich.
