President Trump

I assume the American voter understands they will be on the hook for $100b extra in costs on vehicles and parts and they are happy with it

I don't think they do realise that it is them, the American citizen that pays for the tariffs.
Trump said one US car manufacturer was building in Mexico, his tariffs will force them to relocate to America so creating jobs and they lapped it up.......
Except the customer will have to pay for the higher wages and the tax/tariffs on imported goods.
The car they always bought at a decent price will soon shoot up in price. They don't understand now they never will

Same applies here - remember the Brexit bollocks?

And generally, exports are seen as good for the economy and imports bad. Which is economic nonsense.

In economics circles Navarro is generally viewed as a deluded off the reservation nutter, in other words entirely representative of this administration.

Trump threatened U.S. automakers not to raise prices in response to tariffs in call, said they should be grateful

When President Trump convened CEOs of some of the country's top automakers for a call earlier this month, he issued a warning: They better not raise car prices because of tariffs.
Trump told the executives that the White House would look unfavorably on such a move, leaving some of them rattled and worried they would face punishment if they increased prices, people with knowledge of the call said.
Instead, Trump said, they should be grateful for his elimination of what he called President Joe Biden's electric-vehicle mandate, which involved subsidies and emissions requirements to encourage electric-car production. He made a lengthy pitch for how they would actually benefit from tariffs, two people on the call said, adding that he was bringing manufacturing back to the U.S. and was better for their industry than previous presidents.
For now, dealers have stockpiled a two- to three-month supply of new cars, meaning the impact of the tariffs might not start to be felt until May. At that point, vehicle prices could rise 11% to 12% to offset the tariffs, Morgan Stanley analysts said Thursday in a note.
It is unclear what the Trump administration could do if automakers raise their prices. Trump has targeted disfavored law firms with executive orders, and automakers rely on federal regulators for critical approvals.

Same way i felt about the prior 4 years where the administration then left the border open, and then used tax payer money to fly illegal immigrants around the country and house then in expensive hotels.

Including the Migrants that raped and killed Laken Riley. I too struggled to wrap my head around that. But so many here comfortably did.

Interesting
Zzzzz... Usual Far Right claptrap.

But unless they're a Native American, literally everyone in America is a Migrant. Or from Migrant stock.

Are you a Native American?

I received incredibly sad news yesterday that a good family friend had passed away suddenly from a heart attack
She was such a kind, generous person and a fit, slim, non smoker
Yet this horrible evil bitter **** carries on

This world is so unfair

Your post reminded me of this heart breaking scene from Brassed Off. Sorry for your loss.

Trump says US will 'go as far as we have to' to get control of Greenland. "The world needs us to have Greenland"

LONDON -- President Donald Trump said the U.S. will "go as far as we have to go" to get control of Greenland, ahead of a planned visit to the Arctic island by Vice President JD Vance that has prompted criticism from Greenland and Denmark.

Vance, second lady Usha Vance and Energy Secretary Chris Wright will lead the U.S. delegation to visit the Pituffik military space base in the northwest of the island, having scaled back plans for a broader and longer visit. The American group was originally planning to visit the Greenlandic capital, Nuuk, and a dog sled race.

Trump showed no indication of softening his ambition to take control of the island, which is an autonomous territory but part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

"We need Greenland for national security and international security," Trump said, taking reporters' questions in the Oval Office.

So we'll, I think, we'll go as far as we have to go," he continued. "We need Greenland. And the world needs us to have Greenland, including Denmark. Denmark has to have us have Greenland. And, you know, we'll see what happens. But if we don't have Greenland, we can't have great international security."

Trump added, "I view it from a security standpoint, we have to be there."

Trump also said that he understood "JD might be going," referring to the vice president, but did not offer any details about the trip. Vance is expected to travel to Greenland on Friday.

Hope they give the fascist the welcome he deserves; spit in his face and tell him to go back to uSSa.

After all, the US administration holds no cards.

The reason they are only going to the US base is they went round the locals asking who wanted to meet Vance’s wife, every single person asked told them to fuck off. I do wonder what allies will do if he takes Greenland, will we go to war with USA or will it be sanctions, he really could do it as well, unless some military people stand up to him and indeed republicans in congress.

If he takes Greenland and article 5 isn't invoked, all Europe need to put heavy sanctions on them like Russia.

Everybody is focusing on what Trump and Vance are saying. No one is asking the obvious question: why does Greenland continue to allow the US to have an air base on Greenland ?

Is Greenland/Denmark scared of repercussions if they told Trump to do one ?

If the US really are going to invade, why give them a huge head start by allowing then to keep an air base ? All a general needs to do is say that 5,000 troops are flying to South Korea but landing in Greenland as a stop over.

I'm no expert but it seems insane they haven't fucked them off.

There's probably a land lease in place and whilst the American base is there, there is very little chance that a russian or Chinese ship will rock up and plant a flag

I would presume Denmark would station troops and invoke EU mutual defence clause 42.7 in the event of a build up of US forces. Clause 42.7 obliges member states to assist.

More likely the US will end up leasing the base and exercise legal jurisdiction and control over it.

Denmark can grant this, but there may be opposition from Greenlanders meaning it is put to a vote.

Presume it's a NATO thing. For now anyway.
