Best Opposition Player You've Seen Live v City.

Not many visiting players got applauded for scoring a goal at Maine Road against us, but Cyrille Regis did ..... he seemed to take on our entire defence and just bulldoze his way right through them in a diagonal run before finally sliding the ball into our net from an angle .... what a fantastic goal that was!

If I remember right WBA won that game 3-1, they had a really good side in those days.
I think 'twere 3-2

Stan Matthews then.

But I did see him play against us and he wasn't that good. In his 40s then though!
I saw him play live once at Old Trafford and he was pretty rubbish. Mind you he was in his 50s by then and no one dared to tackle him. They didn’t want to be labelled as the player who put Stanley Matthews out of the game.

He later told the story of how modern players (30 years ago!) seemed to get knee cartilage injuries. "I never had a cartilage," he said, "until I was in my 70s in an exhibition match and I tried to be too clever..."

Paul Gascoigne when he first signed for spurs! I think it was a midweek game at Maine road! Unplayable! He was just amazing!
Said that the following year Paul lake had him in is pocket!!

I don’t think it’s been mentioned yet but Kante in the 2021 CL final was incredible. Was absolutely everywhere that day

City v Stoke in the Spring of 1972 with us chasing down the title.
Gordon Banks put in a staggering performance in goal for Stoke. He stopped virtually everything we threw at him. Needless to say we lost 2-1 which probably cost us the title.
Sadly later in the year he lost an eye in a car crash which took a few years off his career.

Lionel Messi - probably anytime he played against us. Hands down the best and then a gap to anyone else.

A random one off performance against us was Berbatov for Spurs against us in the League Cup QF in Dec 2007; they were down to 10 and he was utterly unplayable that night and won the game for them.

In the Prem League Id say Mo Salah who has been consistently brilliant. Was in the Away end for that wonder goal against us in Oct 2021 - sadly it was ridiculously good.
Further to my post earlier Id also add Kenny Dalglish to this. The finest player with his back to goal that Ive ever seen, with a touch a die for. Regardless of how you view Liverpool FC - and personally I cant stand them - Dalglish was an utterly superb player.

I'd love a "shit player who was better than Messi when they played against City" thread. Can think of a few who had the best game of their lives against us then turned back into Sunday league footballers straight after.
Calum McManaman springs to mind. Terry Fleming at Lincoln too

Berbatov for spurs in the league cup and Bernardo for Monaco in the champions league. Both incredible performances which immediately spring to mind with opposition players. That berbatov one edges it though as spurs were down to 10 men and he won the game for them single handed.

I know this isnt about the Dutch team, but worth a watch

This Milan team was one of the best I've ever seen along with Pep's Barcelona. I remember being able to tune my old black and white portable TV into Welsh TV to watch Sgorio Monday evenings for serie A highlights. Great days.

I had sort of forgotten about that game, probably the best goalkeeping display I have ever seen, Pat jennings had some great games against us at Maine Road but Banks that night was different class & as you say probably cost us the title.

Which of these was the game that Gazza nutmegged Lakey, then turned around to him cupping his ears (Lakey, did have a big pair of lugs, mind) ?

Tony Dinning.

Just saw him in a shopping centre in Poole in Dorset. Chatted about football and fly fishing briefly. Looked well for 9.30am

Is he back living down here then?

I was sat outside Obscura cafe 9 years ago and Gazza was on the table next to me. I never said anything to him and then when I got home I viewed an article online as it was the 25 year anniversary on the World Cup semi final and Gazza’s tears. He must have had mixed feelings that day.

Spoke to him briefly I know he used to have a flat in Canford Cliffs. Asked how he was he was fine, said he'd been fishing in Fordingbridge lately so assume he is. I think he thought I was going to hassle him for a selfie etc. I just let him be and he said God bless. I told him I saw him score a great goal v plymouth in a pre season when he played for Everton.

I remember a few yrs later, probably 76, Shilton had an absolute blinder against us for stoke in a 0-0
