President Trump

That’s a very odd take on the Empire’s sunset.

Maybe they don't teach it in school books, but it's still true.

Q: Did anyone conquer the British Empire?
A: Not really unless you count Singapore and maybe Burma.

Q: So what happened?
A: It became too expense to maintain control over it all and the decision was made to cut the losses.

Just like Trump.. I doubt any text book will actually say he got the neo-nazi fan boys to vote for him en masse.. but ofcourse it is true.

I hope you can see my point that many things can be true and contribute to things at the same time besides just the stuff we read about.

If you don’t mention the role of paying for two world wars, you’re not even on the starting line.

Well yeah ofcourse.. but if people don't want to buy stuff from you.. that doesn't exactly help paying off for the wars does it?

If anything it makes you feel overextended that you can't manage that plot of land over there that's just a money sink.

Similarly like what's happening to Elon.. he/ MAGA will never admit it but they're failing economically due to the boycott and sooner or later.. Tesla and other Elon's companies will be bankrupt.

You can't make people spend their money on your goods if your entire political stance is threatening your own customers.

Sorry, you are talking total nonsense. Look at the amount of British capital in US in 1900 and compare it to 1925 and why it changed.
Secondly look at the export of British capital post 1945 when lend lease was converted to debt by Executive Order. Britain continued to pay for the next 60 years. Any change in Commonwealth trade in those periods are a tiny jot compared to war payments.
Indeed one of the biggest changes in Commonwealth trade for UK came after Brexit.
You should also consider the Commonwealth Sugar Agreement and the regime for Caribbean bananas both designed to ease the cost of independence for Caribbean and other nations.
Similarly, the independence of India made a huge difference to the world textile market.
At the same time, in the 1950’s, UK either stupidly or through poverty did not modernise industry but relied on cheap labour from, er, the Commonwealth.
Then there is the US debate about whether to lend money to the UK to ‘become a socialist state’ according to some in Congress. UK’s ‘fall into communism’ was the founding of the NHS in 1948. Paying for universal health care, free at the point of sale, is a major factor too and was considered far more important than Empire considerations.
Your homely little view doesn’t scratch the surface. A huge change in the world order was taking place …the wind of change, MacMillan called it.

You're missing my point.

If you make the right economic decisions.. your country thrives.. but if you don't.. like placing tariffs.. pissing off your own customers.. killing trade deals.. threatening your own allies.. the country suffers.

Economics is just as powerful as military might.. maybe more so. And that's the point I was making.

Who would have thought this would ever happen.. but it's happening.. thanks MAGA!

No you weren’t. If that was your point you would have said that. Your point was that Empire countries stopped buying British goods. Totally bonkers. A truer statement would have been, Britain could no longer rely on the import of cheap commodities from the Empire.

I'm just pointing out what MAGA is doing is exceedingly stupid as it's creating economic boycotts of the US products.

There are examples in history where boycotts are really effective and that was an example that I showed where it was effective.

Maybe we're having a lost in translation moment but why would I want to shit all over the empire in a Trump thread? My enemy is MAGA.. I'm threatened by MAGA.. not something that hasn't existed in 75 years.

As rev Al Sharpton said, Obama was not a proper black man. Jeez. Only in America.
I have an Anglo-Indian grandson. We discus his ethnicity, er…never.
I'm waiting for my first English-Scottish-Ecuadorian-Korean-American great great niece. A citizen of everywhere.

Yes, but your historical example wasn’t true. There was no ‘boycott’ of British goods along the lines of the response to Maga. Most empire trade was in the other direction. In the midst of debate I forgot to say, which is nearer the truth, that the sunset of the Empire was driven mainly by political considerations. Britain felt its time was up and the empire thought so too. Hence the conferences which settled the terms of independence, which were country specific.

This is just Vegas - if you look on YT there are loads of clips from US tv news echoing the same - its not just Canadians its ICE detaining European visitors because they look dodgy and ruining planned holidays - around places like Niagara its reported to be a ghost town - some Canadians travelled cross border to shop - not any more. Duty Free shops are barely registering a sale - this is not sustainable if he hopes to maintain support - pariah state

I'm not sure where this fits in the argument but "Empire countries" often had to buy British. The Empire wouldn't allow indigenous locomotive manufacturing in India. 14,000 locos imported from the UK over nearly a century.
