People bang on about the atmosphere at the Etihad, thank God it is not this non-stop crap you get in Europe.

Thing is it often seems to bear no relation to the actual game. You wonder if they're watching it, even though they're in the stadium.

European atmosphere's are a touch overrated in my opinion. I'm all for noise and having a good time but they never seem to react to anything happening on the pitch.

I want a good atmosphere at games but it's got to match what's happening on the pitch.

It isn't part of the penalty area, no. From memory, isn't it there to maintain the required distance from the penalty spot for opposing players.
