Sorry but this is just pure vandalism - there should be no way anyone professional or DIY be allowed near this sort of job without first approaching the authorities to get approval. THis disgusts me.

 
The beginning of the story has you believe it was all above board, experts say it was dead and a health and safety issue.
Then all the green groups wade in and say it shouldn’t have been chopped down.

Clearly this isn’t a case of vandalism like the Hadrians Wall tree was, more a case of a disagreement between experts and environmentalists. The council, however, in my opinion, should have at the very least been notified prior to cutting it, to give the final seal - or not - of approval.

Sadly I dlnt think any approval is required if the tree is on your land and does not have a TPO on it. I believe anyone can apply to the LA to have a TPO placed on a tree, even if its on someone else's land which is clearly a good thing.
