Tijjani Reijnders

Yep, he absolutely did—and instead of rectifying those mistakes by going for Neves last June, we doubled down and brought Gündoğan back on a free. Meanwhile, PSG got a free run at one of the best and youngest CDM/box-to-box midfielders out there—Neves!

We didn’t even put up a fight. No pressure. No scare. We just let PSG take him, just like we did with Kvaratskhelia, Hakimi, and Nuno Mendes.

And look—I get it. We can’t sign every top talent. But what frustrates me is that we didn’t even try with some of these players. There was no intent. No urgency. We’ve watched elite-level talent, players there for the taking, walk straight into the arms of other clubs while we hesitated or looked the other way.

Hopefully Hugo Viana will do better.

I remember telling someone in here that Reijnders is a complete midfielder—capable of operating effortlessly across all midfield roles, even though his strengths clearly lie in the offensive third. And what did I get for it? Insults and slander, as if I was speaking blasphemy!

Last year, I was absolutely gutted when we passed on the chance to bring him in. I genuinely thought we’d make a move—only for us to sit on our hands and wait for Gündoğan to arrive on a free. Then came January, and I thought, “Surely now, this is it—we’re pulling the trigger,” but once again, radio silence.

Reijnders is a top-tier player—elegant, technically superb, and tactically razor-sharp. He’s got that rare blend of composure, progression, and incisiveness in the final third that we desperately need. It just makes too much sense. I have to see him in a City shirt—it’s been long overdue.
He dribbles through traffic and operates in tight spaces in inspired fashion. He is so deft with the ball at his feet and he carries it forward with power and elegance. He, Rodri and Nico would give our midfield a physically imposing look and presence.

I couldn’t have said it better myself. For instance, we all knew Rodri needed support and proper rest—yet we still managed to miss out on Neves, who could’ve been the ideal deputy and taken over the role Nico’s filling now.

I just really hope we don’t mess this one up. Reijnders is the guy for that 8 role. He’s tailor-made for it, and if we pass up the chance again, it’ll feel like another opportunity wasted.

Just imagine if we had landed Neves—
We could’ve been lining up with Reijnders, Rodri, and Neves for our 6 and 8 position. That midfield trio? Practically unbeatable. Balanced, technical, dynamic—it would’ve been a nightmare for any opponent.

Nothing wrong with Kov.

When paired with the right midfielders he’s a great addition but this year we’ve been all over the place and have only really just found a structure (for pep to change it in the derby)

Nothing wrong with him, but do you prefer to replace him with Tijjani ?

Yes but what if we had both? Gundo still might go and Reijnders is so far the only link. I know O’Reilly will get minutes. But Nunes will go.

If I had to choose though I go agree I’d rather Reijnders. But my point is he isn’t a bad signing. Nunes is.

People forget sticking Kov next Rodri late in the season last year was what helped get us over the finish line. He is a good player that we had to slot into too big of role this year.

It's a shame we passed on Neves - he's an absolute monster now, but I'm pleased with what Nico has brought us and can potentially contribute going forward. I wouldn't be upset if Kovacic returned but Gundo, Bernardo and Kevin will depart, I imagine. This may shock you, but I can forsee a role for Grealish in midfield next season, but unless Pep is actually willing to do it, he should find another club for a new start.

Yeah, it’s a real shame. He was already a monster at Benfica, but now he’s surrounded by higher-caliber players at a bigger club—finally getting the platform to showcase the full extent of his talent.

but I'm pleased with what Nico has brought us and can potentially contribute going forward.
Yeah, just to be clear—this isn’t a knock on Nico. I’m genuinely glad he’s with us and helping bring some stability to the midfield, even if he wouldn’t have been my first choice originally. I’ve followed his journey from his Barcelona days to now, and I respect the growth he’s shown and the fight he has in him. He is a real fighter and he will show up for us. He’s a hard worker, clearly driven, and has that fire in his belly. I’m confident he’ll keep improving and becoming even more important for us.

It appears to be so.

so he needs another player to play well? not knocking Kova as he does ok but needing to be paired correctlyto perform, that is a massive weakness, one we could have avoided.

Txiki has a great legacy but he gets about 40% of his signing choices wrong, did at barca too, luckily he has a genious as a mate managing the team ;-)

Kovacic was a great signing- the treble squad was a midfielder light, and they grabbed him right when the window opened. But, then txiki screwed up the Gundo renewal, missed out on Bellingham and Rice, panic bought Nunes, and then Kovacic went from squad player to regular starter. As squad player, excellent signing. As regular starter, terrible signing.

He’s a good first team player he’s just not a 6 and neither is Gundo.

If everyone was fully fit and we had a midfield of Rodri-Kov-KDB we be in the title race again

No one resembles KDB.

I did say his passing/vision is underrated and wouldn’t be surprised if he played further forward when he was older
The only player that has been close to KDB’s creative talent is Messi. I don’t even think that’s me being a biased City fan, Kev has been one of the most unique players the game has ever seen. Finding a direct replacement for him would be rarer than finding rocking horse shit.

Reijnders strolls straight into our starting XI—even in a Champions League final.

But since you don't see it the same way, who exactly do you think keeps him out of the lineup? And realistically, who would you prefer we go after instead, that you think may be better than Reijnders?
I disagree with that. He isn't any better than the current set of aging midifielders

Being able to play a perfect through ball or cross whilst running full pace is kevs biggest attribute and I've not even seen messi do it although messi does almost everything else at world class level.

100% - Pep thinking / hoping then praying gundog and kova were OK to back up as no6 / Rodders for 1st half of season was one of his biggest clangers yet. He couldnt do much about Stonsey or Akanji to be other options injured all the time properly fuked us up
