Aston Villa (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

Any referee who doesn't have the bollocks to stand up to VAR urging for a video review when the play was clearly not a penalty, clearly a player hurling themselves to ground to minimal contact should quit their job.
It was minimal contact and he definitely left his leg there - but without Diaz sticking his knee on him (even if it was powder-puff) the ref wouldn't have had any decision to even consider.

Naive defending.

Rashford looks like he's just put his finger through the paper and licked it.
Moody wanker
He'll disappear back into anonymity soon, he thinks he's too 'big' for Villa.

He'll push for a move again and if he gets one his attitude issues will re-emerge and he'll be back in obscurity where he belongs...

And... regardless of whether the penalty was harsh... at what point did the rule change to allow the player to stop during the run up? That should have been retaken.

The rule actually out to be that if the attacker stops in the run up the goal should be disallowed with no retake.

It basically cheating. The keeper has no chance. That's why it's a rule, but it's never enforced.

No idea where those 5 minutes came from, but fuck me we profited. Get the fuck in!!!!

We’ll finish 2nd and win the Cup.
5 mins was the very least that officials thought they could get away with, after villa goalkeeper stood around for at least that length of time when he had the ball ,and pissing about wasting time at every opportunity

Delighted for Nunes, works his socks off and never hides.
Very soft penalty which was never a "clear and obvious" mistake, God knows why that VAR clown felt it worthy of review....should be investigated that.
Please explain why Pep starts McAtee (a distinctly average footballer) over a match winner like Doku, that's two home starts for the lad in recent weeks and he has missed 3 sitters, the guy has no presence on the pitch. Made no impact in the PL last season at Sheffield Utd.
Should be able to get enough points now to cement our top 5 place.
GK coach - please teach our two GK's when to charge out and when to stay in the box, every bloody week one of them makes the wrong decision.

Rashford - social conscience - I'm not arguing with that - it's good. But as a player, an attacker - 28 next birthday - 89 Prem goals in his entire career - ten years in the first team - is truly pathetic. But he plays with the attitude of someone who thinks he's way better than he actually is.

Had to laugh in the second half when he stopped on the edge of the box tried a few body fakes and Dias just took the ball off him. He ran into another blind alley after that and got hauled off. It shows how laughable it is that the rag media are wanking themselves off about him when he’s downed tools for the rags who are now sat on 38 points. God help Villa if they sign him as he will down tools once again when he gets his contract.

Why the fuck was Dick playing for a draw?

In order to claim a Champions League spot, Villa needed the win more than we did, so why have Martinez waste time like he did?

The Brummie twats got exactly what they deserved; fuck all!
Yeah, it was utterly bizarre. We’ve struggled a fair bit this season against quick physical sides. They nullified that threat themselves by playing so negatively. I thought they’d have been pushing up to halfway due to us only having one player in the front 6 with any kind of speed.

Them sitting back just played into our hands. With our old boys in midfield able to just dictate and pass it between them for fun. He’s obviously a very good manager but him taking Rashford off last week when he was absolutely flying 2nd half against PSG was also bizarre and effectively helped PSG just see the game out quite easily.

tbh, much of the time wasting was quite legal. We are seeing it more and more nowadays, with the centreback taking the goal kick and passing it straight to the keeper who then just stands there with it until someone presses him, which hopefully then opens up a space for him to pass through the midfield. Last night we made the choice to let him keep it rather than squeezing him. It's very frustrating to watch but I think Pep didn't want to fall into the trap of getting sucked in and leaving big gaps in midfield. Overall I think Pep got that right. They often ended up resorting to trying the long ball, which we won back almost every time.

I agree, he kept slowly creeping forwards and thats what Rat face at the Rags also does. Its something that needs to be looked into, probably something like can't slow down momentum during runup or something. Its putting keepers at a massive disadvantage.

I don't like how they can hear the VAR Comms and we can't.

We hear the commentators telling us the VAR decisions all the time on coming togethers etc...

I do wonder if they can hear the live commentary at Stockley park as well.
I'm convinced they can at Stockley Park and have commented numerous times on BM that as soon as GNIAC or Spitty start to question anything or make a snide remark about a foul we are suddenly told its going to VAR. Definite influencing imo.

I cannot wax more lyrical about Nico O'Reilly.

19 years old...I repeat 19 years old.

Of course he isn't the first at this age, but to come into a team like City, with very little involvement previously and play like a seasoned pro is just astonishing.

Most get blooded against 'lesser' teams over a couple of seasons, but this lad has come straight into the Premier League and on top of that, he is playing out of position.

Who's to say he won't be converted to full-back. He seriously needs to consider it.

Speaks volumes for our incredible Academy.

BTW, five ex-Academy players on the pitch/bench last night.

He is 20 but agree with all that

Possibly with City away on paper still being a tough tie they tried to contain the game in the hope of getting us on the break. I have no issues with doing that, we have looked like we have played for draws countless times this season. The ref should have booked early for any time wasting then i tis up to them if they want to keep running that risk.

I was unsure at the lineup pre match, annoyed Bernardo was starting but him actually playing central made it better instead of being invisible on the wings. Results are the priority now 100% but i just enjoyed the performance last night, a bit of urgency, trying to build attacks quicker and just looking a touch sharper. I thought we was garbage against Everton but walked away with a nice win, I'd have been happier last night even if we drew just due to the performance. Winning is a huge bonus and I think seals the deal for CL football. We need to maintain that level now.

I am well used to goalies being slow at our place, get a teeny bit frustrated but feck that Martinez last night was absolutely taking the pis£ and I was raging in frustration with him and that bloody ref for allowing him to get away with it.

As for that penalty blatant cheating from Ramsey and the officials.

I do wish Pep would remark about the inconsistentencies in his presser. We may get the odd favourable decision, just to take the spotlight off the blatant bias against us by officials, pl etc for the odd match or two.

Villa fan here,we got what we deserved ,we were poor and looked like we came for a draw. Why Unai took Cash off for a centre half really not sure , Doku made the most of it fair play to him.
Must have been very frustrating for you watching your in form team play so negatively. Regarding Cash i doubt he’d have been able to stop Doku either. Very few fullbacks can stop him when he gets going. Unluckily for you he produced one of the best crosses since he’s been at the club.

We love Unai but he got it wrong last night. We needed to win but sat back and came for a draw.We know Roger’s on the right dosn’t work and should have been subbed much earlier , Disasi is not a right back once he came on we were in trouble , same as PSG away. Realistically I think that’s champs league over for us now , hope it dosnt effect us for FA cup semi against Palace as these are another team that have had our number recently.
