This has got to be the opening game or away game in August 1987 (I Think) Imre Varadi Scored and I'm sure the Banana craze started from this, when we all shouted Imre Banana, as you say it was a glorious day and then the heavens opened and we all got drenched, remember a drenched fat bloke stripped off for some reason, probably not much tackling on the plastic pitch, so he decided to show his own..........not a pretty sight!!What was the game at Oldham when we were locked on the terraces and it leathered it down for about fifteen minutes? Proper monsoon.
I'm sorry to disagree, but football hooliganism was very much part of British culture, and to claim otherwise is to ignore its dramatic impact on society.Obviously I was talking about what they are like now!!! And I’m so sorry if I ‘generalise’ a hooligan. Part of British culture? Fuck me! What a load of bollox
Yeh there’s some parts I agree with there. Doesn’t so them all being cunts, which they all were and many still areI'm sorry to disagree, but football hooliganism was very much part of British culture, and to claim otherwise is to ignore its dramatic impact on society.
Along with high unemployment, the prospect of strike action, the poll tax, lack of control of public expenditure and high interest rates, hooliganism helped to inform an entire decade of British life. Thatcher used it relentlessly against the working classes, jumping on high profile incidents such as the Luton Millwall riot, Heysel, and most despicably of all, the Valley Parade fire as examples of how we 'could not be trusted'.
Electrified fences, all-seater stadia, and ID cards weren't ideas plucked out of thin air, football was seen as a working class pastime, and we had to be punished.
I would even argue that much of the problem was a case of 'give a dog a bad name', and that treating people like animals led some of them to behave like animals. Every week we were subjected to some ridiculous privations, working toilets were a luxury in many grounds, especially away ends (I'm looking at you Derby County), fences were so high and bulky, and policing so heavy-handed that the potential for disaster was practically ever present.
There is no bravado on my part, I was a self confessed yellow belly custard, good for nothing more than bouncing up and down at the back. But, football hooliganism was endemic in the 70s and 80s from Sunderland to Brighton and all points in between, week in and week out, throughout the leagues.
Yeah, the game when the heavens opened was this one...never been as wet at a football game in my life, loads of lads just taking their T shirts off, absolutely drenched. Impromptu games of football on the space at the back of the terrace :)This has got to be the opening game or away game in August 1987 (I Think) Imre Varadi Scored and I'm sure the Banana craze started from this, when we all shouted Imre Banana, as you say it was a glorious day and then the heavens opened and we all got drenched, remember a drenched fat bloke stripped off for some reason, probably not much tackling on the plastic pitch, so he decided to show his own..........not a pretty sight!!
As i remember it,Blackburn in their wisdom decided to charge £1 more in the City end that day, hundreds thought fuck that and all went in their end! The big terrace on the side literally had hundreds of City lads in,scored and went mental ,all ran to the Blackburn end behind the goal in the vain hope of the fences disappearing and just making a show of how many of us were in there! Think a few blues had gone up in their end too and it had flared up.Nobody even considered moving us,no police or stewards came in,just left us to it!Off topic a little bit but the big match revisited April 12th edition on itv x had the Blackburn/City game on 84/5 season. Anybody there know what was going off in the Blackburn end just after City scored. Loads from down the side were legging it across to their main end
It was hilarious watching it, I thought they were Blackburn fans who'd spotted some City in their kop endAs i remember it,Blackburn in their wisdom decided to charge £1 more in the City end that day, hundreds thought fuck that and all went in their end! 40 years ago young and daft, couidn't give a shiny shite what you think, it was part of the culture for a lot of working class lads even if you don't like it
Yes, I remember it too although I thought it was the game in 83-84. It kicked off in the corner of the Blackburn End behind the goal and the City lot in their other end up the side (The Riverside) ran down, were offering everyone out and some jumped over the fence to help the City lot who were already fighting behind the goal.As i remember it,Blackburn in their wisdom decided to charge £1 more in the City end that day, hundreds thought fuck that and all went in their end! Jeez man you must’ve led a very sheltered life if a small time injury incurred 40 years ago still resonates so strongly and causes such unfounded resentmentYeh there’s some parts I agree with there. Doesn’t so them all being cunts, which they all were and many still are
Looked like the 84/5 game mate unless City did the same both seasonsYes, I remember it too although I thought it was the game in 83-84. City fans on here put you in hospital? Name and shame!Yet the knobs on here who put me in hospital as an 11 year old glorify it like they are rock hard. And stopped a fellow City fan going to another away game for 7 years! Sad pricks
was you holding the banner the other night near the statues?I took my t-shirt off for this and stuffed it in my pocket to hopefully have something dry to wear later
