The "Eric Nixon" Final

I was at that game...12 years old sat on a wall at the north stand end of the Kippax with my dad and Grandad.....remember it was bloody freezing!

It’s funny how fans remember things differently. For me Nixon got suckered into getting sent off. He threw away the game because they’d got under his skin. He didn’t have the intelligence to rise above the battering they clearly gave him.

He went right down in my estimation that day and Palace went into the ‘hated teams’ section.

The referee is there to protect players. He was targeted. Yes he should not have lashed out but again the ref shouldn’t have let the wind up get that far. Bright was running right at him at pace. He’d have got clattered into.

Instead of raising his arm, because he did, I saw it from the Kippax, he could have gone to ground. He didn’t because they’d succeeded in winding him up and he was angry.

He lost us the game that day.

“Gone to ground”? You mean stand there and wait for a fully grown adult to run at pace into him?
Again, I’m not saying what he did was OK but neither would I expect him to stand there and be ran at. The ref should have stopped the nastiness before it reached that point.

I was a 10 year old watching that game in the North stand with my old man. Nixon was my hero at the time and Bright and Wrights actions gave me an unhealthy hatred of those cunts from Croydon

I seem to recall a flashing yellow light going off on top of one of the dugouts at one point as well?

New Eric very well, lived round the corner from him in Withington, played in the same Sunday League team with him (before City came along) , been on a lads holiday with him. You wouldn't want to be on the opposite side in a punch up. Proper character.
