Snooker World Championship 2025

Serious question mate, do you see it as a negative if it moves to China for bigger prize money, for me its shit that tradition can be bought, but it will also develop the sport?

As much as people don't like it, foreign investment in sport is no bad thing IMO. But the investors want something in return.

Boxing is a prime example, since the Saudi's have taken over, They have got the deals done for the top fights to happen, and Boxers are now earning more in for one fight arranged by Turki Al-Sheikh than they could imagine!

Money in sport is fantastic, when it's invested in the sport the right way!

The way I see it is. Snooker can not be a big arena sport ? its not darts, that fans go for a piss up and standing a big arena making noise and watching on a big screen,

Yes, investment in snooker is welcome, moving the world championship because of the size will happen if Sheffield council doesn't revamp the Crucible and add 2000 seats, The world championship has not always been at Sheffield.
It was held in Manchester, so tradition must evolve and keep up with modern times.

I fear China taking over Snooker and taking all the big tournaments from the UK, once they get the World Championship Snooker, then it will die in the UK, Winning £500.000 for last night's winner will be a drop in the ocean once China take over, $5million to $10million for the winner and that is just the beginning.

He placed bets for others, probably under pressure from Liang Wenbo.
Also he tried to talk Yan Bingtao out of doing what he did to no avail.

OK, it's alright then
3 years of placing bets on bent matches, was probably under pressure from Liang Wenbo
Give over, everybody knows it's wrong, the lad is not daft and should not have done it ?

Liang Wenbo is just like Stephen Lee, who takes all the blame for all of the crimes and gets the large Ban
Snooker match fixing happens on a large scale ? It's the first thing you learn is the hustle, taking easy money

Don't worry. Snooker is quite a minority sport in China.

I would propose a two stage world title.
1. A tournament in Sheffield with say 32 players called the World Championship
stage 1.
2. Simultaneously a similar tourney in China also called WC stage 1.
3. Both tourneys played to a final with prize money, but the top eight go through to stage 2 with the results determining the seedlings for stage 2.
4. Stage 2, A tournament in China called the WC Finals. 16 players with the usual format to find the champion.

This way, tradition is preserved and the new reality accommodated. I would expect to see big money in stage 2.

I got bored with the championship this year. I think the sport needs a Ryder Cup/Mosconi Cup type competition now, Europe v China in a six-red ball format.

Snooker's popularity has boomed in China -It has been estimated that 50 million people play the sport, up to 350 million watch it and China has 300,000 snooker halls.

UK has around 650.
Also, snooker is part of the curriculum in Chinese schools where it is viewed as equal to athletics, football etc.

More people watch PL, but you know China's football is ...a joke. Most people just watch, very few people are willing commit to train.(Or let their chiledren to become a professional player.)
Study in school, and go to a good university. Always the top priority for most Chinese families.

Look, he got away with it and good luck to the lad.
But if you think it's a minor crime in what happened and the lad was under pressure from somebody else you're a fool
You have no evidence he “got away” with it.

Everybody in snooker who has commented on his case has backed his side of the story. All you have is your penchant for believing the conspiracy.

He’s more Ivan Toney than Mohammed Amir.

He didn’t get away with anything, he admitted to the charges he was accused of.

I wouldn't bother engaging with him on this mate. I replied to him last week giving him a detailed version of what happened but he still didn't accept it and never will.

Also his Stephen Lee comparison is absolutely laughable as Lee was ACTUALLY caught match fixing and was given a lifetime ban just like Wenbo and Hang were
