The big problem is with Foden being out of form
The problem is Pep selecting Foden. We now play better without him. He has been a liaibility, offering little and slowing down by getting in the way of play all season. The tempo increased as soon as he was taken off and we created chances straight away.

More is expected of a "player of the year" as a player and leader. If something is wrong then keep him out as picking him with his poor performances must have other players left out questioning his selection and their role. On the field is taking poor positions so team mates do not pass to him and when they do get a simple recycle. There is no awareness, energy or desire compared with the last season.

Lol.....who played the invisible man from the start, yes he's from the academy and a City fan.....so am I, and would offer just as much, only Haaland had fewer touches than him in the first half!!
Need a goal? Great, got Marmoush on the bench! So puts on Savinho, who offers next to nothing. Our defense has been injured and poor all season, then with Dias/Gvardiol it (by accident maybe) looks better.....so....change it, put Gvardiol at left back, at the expense of O'Reilly, who is actually more of a threat going forward than our wide players ;)
It's less the old guard letting him down, it's who he/club plays and buys.
Usually reliable? they have been gash most of the season!
To be fair to Pep I think the plan was to have the fullbacks doing the width and then pack the box and get a lucky break. Really hard to play against such a low block - you get a cross in and there are plenty back to clear it but if you shoot then there's plenty back to block it. You pass it around and be patient for an opening then you get accused of being slow and boring.

The big problem is with Foden being out of form and KdB not being KdB any more then we have zero creativity in the team. When we also have to play that compressed then the centre half's need to be creative also so with Stones and Rodri missing and with the form of the other two then this is what happens.

Could have started with Savinho and Doku but then you lose two midfielders around the box and they're just crossing it into a packed area anyway. Or you can go full chaos and get caught in transition and lose one nil.

Could have tweaked a couple of positions with Gvardiol for instance but Kovacic will always be Kovacic and Silva will always be coming deep to collect the ball just to give it back to the defenders. You also need to create space for Haaland to crash into a cross and the cross also need to be whipped in and not floated.
A lucky break against Southampton!!!

Says how much we have fallen when our two best players are Kovacic and O'Reilly.

We have witnessed an alarming and unnecessary slump.

Perfect as in we dominated the game they put every player in the 18 yeard box and we couldn't score. How do tactics work when you are already 90% in there half?
Funnily enough, we didn't dominate that game, Southampton dominated it. They did what they wanted to do and we couldn't stop them from doing it.
We didn't score because we didn't set up a plan to negate their tactics, or even probe for weaknesses.

We waited for them to make a mistake or get unlucky with a bounce in the box. They didn't, and they weren't.

We were dominated by a team on 11 points after 36 games. Truly eye-watering.

26 shots and not a single goal speaks volumes. Don`t lets hide the fact that this was a very poor result today.

Stat from the first half was 300 passes and 2 shots that’s poor. Don’t know what’s happened to us

Could be a Vital point gained in the end?

Anyone else?
I always like to take the positives after feeling crap for 10 minutes after a crap result!
There's absolutely no way that result can be spun into a positive I'm afraid given our aims and their circumstances.

Not even in the slightest... its a point yes, but very much 2 points dropped.

Stats are misleading aren't they.

The only 1 that counts is the final score. Nil nil at the worst team in PL history is unacceptable.

Our first meaningful effort was Marmoush near the end.

We were fucking shit and Soton let us have the ball and we did fuck all with it.

If our C/ F is crowded out why continually cross the ball in, waste of fucking time.

As for the corners! Soton basically used them as time wasting exercises because we are fucking clueless with them. In swinging to the keeper to collect or 1 of the number of defenders to clear.

One if if not the worst game of the season.
Although we’ve made sure they’re NOT the worst team in PL history….

I'd agree with some of that for sure mate, but I would temper it with we can't win it all all of the time and whist this isn't our best season under Pep we are still in the top 3 best sides this season incredibly.

Good points about speculating about motivation though, something is amiss.
I reckon we've both come through tougher times :D, and I do get we're not playing in the SPL so we won't win the title 10 years in a row.
There's just something SO wrong with this side, and it comes from team selections, compared with what Pep has done previously.
Pep has made his reputation on "finding a way". I get we've not conceded many recently, as you correctly pointed out in another thread, but today we desperately needed younger/quicker legs in that midfield and he just never saw it.
Top 3/5 masks where we really are imho

Tinkering for no reason

Wank performance

Palace will bum us at this rate if Pep doesn't stop playing favourites

Denial. The 1st step on the road to recovery.
I am able to accept one season where we’ve had to fight for CL & a cup final. I’m also realistic enough to know we were going to have a season where we needed to rebuild. But I didn’t expect that season to include a cup final & a good possibility of the 15th year of qualifying for the CL

But we’ve still got a good chance
