Southampton (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

And really peeing me off as Arse already seem to have their new signings lined up - Zubamedi who I rate. How are they getting business done early?

I'm dreading next week, not looking forward to CWC and have no faith for next season.

I know we have had far worse in the last 40 years, but the drop off from the Treble winning season to this is beyond belief.

I just don't know what it is....
100% shit show, no chance of challenging dippers if today’s performance was anything to go by…..

We don't choose to play this way. The opposition make us play this way. There was no point in the game where we could break on them. They kept to many players back. We just needed a lucky break in the box.
I honestly don’t think that’s true mate, Liverpool are better than us and they don’t have to deal with it as much or as severely - it’s the way we play, our high line, short passes.

Agreed except for the word "recently". We were slow and predictable for months if not years. Its been a steady decline in terms of attractive football.

It was still decent enough to win us games and competitions but it's been a long time since we've genuinely been a consistently exciting watch.
Hard to argue with that considering how we used to play when Pep arrived.
We pressed hard and in packs to win the ball back as quickly as possible.
Without the ball always moving and looking for space.
Now we stand still waiting for a wonder pass.
We also used to have goal scorers all over the pitch.
Time for that rebuild with younger hungrier players.

Rubbish. Today’s mess is the kind of performance/ result which changes the trajectory. Pathetic effort from all of them after 8 days off and then a further 7 after today. We are a complete mess and couldn’t beat one of the worse ever PL teams, especially when we needed to today.
Our decline started with a piss poor performance against them in October.
Chill out it’s only a game.

Why did we turn into Spam It FC? Aimless hoofs into the box, even more aimless blams from distance. A really tough watch in what should have been a day when players said to Pep "I dare you not to play me in the final".

We do choose to play this way though... how many times have we won a ball in our half, haaland makes a run on the turn and all it takes is a ball over the top or between the lines and he's in.

Instead we win it back play some random to receive the press, then we go to a pass across the back, a couple of bounce passes, which teams don't bother to press now, then we move the ball up the pitch to where, hey presto they have 11 men in a set system that's hard to break down.

We need to have a gang ho mentality in the first 20 mins, blitz teams and not allow them to sit behind the ball for 90 mins. They either have to come at us and we pick them apart or they say fuck this well stick to 2-0 and shut up shop

the implications of these dropped points could be huge.....IF we dont get CL forget the rebuild.

The names we are being linked with now arent overly inspiring but with CL we will be shopping in midtable area for players.

Pep ball is over.

The days of pointless possession are done.

Ignoring our performance, that southampton performance was possibly up there with the worst ever gutless performance in top flight history, no wonder their stands are half empty, who wants to watch shite like that ?

Embarrasing they celebrated like they'd won.
It was but you can't blame them for doing it both putting eleven behind and celebrating as it stopped them being the joint worse team in Premier League history. What does it say about our team if they fancied their chances of getting a point today.
Plus there were over 30k on today and it looked pretty full from where I was stood.

So if you were in charge what would have been the starting 11 for today?
Ederson
Nunes... Dias..Gvardiol... O'Reilly
...............Kova.....Gonzo..........
...............Kev.......Gundo/Bernado.,...
.....Foden/Mcatee.........Marmoush....

First subs
Doku, Haaland and whichever of Bernie/Gundo didn't start. But if you were hell bent on starting our superstar striker, Haaland, it should have been for the other striker position ( i.e Foden/Mcatee) and not for Marmoush.

Its the personnel that has produced the best football and the best chance creation.

Pep believed what you believe, that any 11 we choose in any formation should have been enough. Sadly, he and you are not wrong, it should have been historically. But not this season... And we have ample evidence of it. The 0-0 at United showed we can be as bad as the worst team in the League this season.

We've only excelled in a very narrow band of formation/personnel this season. We don't have the usual latitude we've had in years past, but somehow its not registering with Pep and many it seems. As he keeps trying old stuff that used to work in years past, but Can't work this season.

We are not that good. But in certain orientation, we play our best football. We should IMHO stick to that narrow orientation as best we can :(
