I've just found an American historian traipsing along the Western Front. Today I saw him at a village called Fleury, just north of Verdun, one of umpteen French villages that were obliterated in 1916 and never rebuilt. But they still have a Mairie and the usual French signs when you enter and leave a place. The staggering information was that the area contains 150,000 French soldiers who have never been found. i thought Thiepval with 70-odd thousand British unfound soldiers was something I've always had difficulty getting my head around. I knew that Verdun was a scene of carnage but 150,000 missing . . . . . .!
