Referees’ Performances | 2024/2025

Gonna throw another spanner into the works. I've looked at our missed penalty upteen times. Their goalkeeper moves both feet in front of the goal line before Mamoush hits the ball. That penalty should have been retaken. But obviously if the media don't highlight it the incident just melts away. The commentary on ITV was appalling yesterday, turned to BBC 2nd half. The fans who attended Wembley must have come home not knowing a thing about the Palace keeper.
This is where the whole system stinks. You pay hundreds to attend a final, you know fuck all of what is going on with decisions. There are huge screens at each end of Wembley with loud speakers, but none of it used to inform any fans what the fuck is going on. This is where the system stinks, why are discissions hidden from paying supporters. Major discissions need to be shown and reasons for discissions explained to the paying supporters.
Fans watching from home must be nearly smashing their telly's listening to what cunts like Lee Dixon think of an incident and we're expected to sit in our chairs and just accept it.
Football in England and Europe need to get their act together, fans everywhere are fuckin sick of being treated like monkey's. Would those discissions yesterday gone against the rags or dippers ? Not a fuckin chance and the media would have been in uproar.
Fans up and down the country need to demand fully explained discissions from refs and var by on field devices and explain how any discission was reached.

You couldn’t make it up could you.
Imagine if it was the rags or dippers this had happened to.

There would’ve uproar in all the papers and sky sports news would be all over it.

PIGMOL are as corrupt as the PL
The Dippers and their media shills kicked up a massive stink when they were on the end of a shocker v Spurs a couple of years ago.
I can't think of another shocker that has gone against them since.
City just bend over and take it.

When Henderson saved the penalty it gave Palace huge belief that it was going to be their day. Similarly our lads started to doubt. Like it or not teams are effected mentally by big decisions going against.
We lost against to an quite average team because we couldn't muster enough pressure or momentum to get the ball in the onion bag simple as that really. We cant keep harping on about refs. Plenty of time to equalise we just didn't have the class.

Surely city should put a complaint in.

Just a shame the fucking government stopped the UAE buying the telegraph as my thought was always it would be a vehicle for Man City to get their point of view across and be a friendly media outlet.

You're right, why should our opposition have to play to the laws of the game, we should just always be multiple levels above our opposition in every game so that when referees decide to ignore the laws in favour of our opponents we can just overcome it.
Saying we can't harp on about referees is such an incredibly dumb argument, we may not have done enough to score but Palace didn't do enough without breaking the rules of the game to keep us out either so what's the difference?
We weren't good enough to beat them with the referees making a very basic, game changing decision against us and they weren't good enough to beat us without breaking the rules along with the referee changing the game by ignoring the rules in their favour.
By your logic, if you're saying if we can't say the referee changed that game in Palace's favour then surely that means Palace can't celebrate the win because it was the referee who got them over the line.

Darren England
Jared Gillette
Michael Salisbury

All Dippers.

Darren Cann.

Ex palace youth player

Shouldn't have anything to do with it...
I didn’t realize it was Salisbury. I think I’ll just have to let my wife do the school run for the next few days otherwise we might fall out.

Perhaps there is someone with a knowledge of VAR protocols who can answer a question? According to an "in the know" in the refereeing community VAR can only communicate with the on field referee to confirm a review is taking place (and therefore to stop play as appropriate) and then to advise the on field referee when the var considerations have been completed and whether he/she should just play on or go to the monitor.

In other words VAR and the on field referee do not discuss anything about the incident itself until VAR have finished their deliberations. That seems a bit silly to me as then VAR can't know what the on field referee has or hasn't seen (although VAR do have access to the on field communication equipment).

A second question is whether anyone understands the difference between a "clear and obvious error" and "serious missed incident" in the VAR protocol, and whether the two are treated differently by VAR?

My cynical answer would be who the fuck knows.

But the difference between a clear and obvious error and a serious missed incident depends on whether the referee sees something and makes a mistake, or doesn't see the incident at all.

How that relates to yesterday's incident is anyone's guess. Did Atwell not see the handball, in which case it would be a serious missed incident? Or did he see it but think it was inside the box, in which case it would be a clear and obvious error. Not that it really matters as VAR didn't think it was a DOGSO anyway ...

As far as communication is concerned, IFAB protocol says the VAR can hear all the onfield officials' communication but the referee can only hear the VAR when initiated by the VAR. So two-way communication is possible to clarify what the referee saw / didn't see, for example.

How far IFAB protocol is respected by PGMOL is anyone's guess, though.

Edit: I think.

The money we can spend on players we should be multiple levels above Crystal Palace. The team Vinny captained didn't need excuses.

I see all the excuses on here. Give it up. We've been absolutely bang average all season. Lets hope things improve next year and we can make the CL this year.

Twatwell, is and always will be a cnut.

I am baffled as to how officials and pundits can say that Haaland is running away from goal?

The ball is played over the top and is heading to the goal area.

But, anyway, still doesn't mask a rather disjointed performance.

Onwards and upwards.
If no one touches that ball it’s in the back of the net.
How anyone can say it’s going away from goal is beyond me.

It’ll be swept under the carpet and forgotten about just like the Tottenham handball in the CL.
The offside goal agains dippers in CL when Milner played it and the rest.

Yet we will hear about the wrongly allowed goal against dippers for Spurs for eternity.

We’re outflanked. It’s not just the PL and PIGMOL but the media are also hostile towards us constantly referring to 115 and insinuating we’re cheats.

As long as it stays like this these decisions against us won’t just continue but will be celebrated by the majority who call us cheats.

I don’t think anyone is saying we aren’t bang average.
For me I know we’ve been shit and it’s hard enough to win at the moment as it is without the officials making ludicrous decisions like we saw yesterday.

Surely ae can complain about bad officiating, so bad it makes you question if it’s intentional cheating and still think we’ve been shit all season.

It was not a vintage display by any means: defensive uncertainty, sloppy passes and crosses hung up in the air rather than put in with some pace certainly helped Palace. We needed to move the ball much faster. BUT had we shown a willingness to shoot - Nico O'Reilly had a golden chance - could have helped. But it is impossible to deny that VAR had a massive impact on the result. The penalty should have been retaken and the goalkeeper who saved it should not have been on the field anyway. Ten man Palace would have found their rearguard action much more difficult.

So you're advocating a tiered refereeing system where the laws of the game are applied relative to the amount spent by each team in a game? So if a team spent £100m more than their opposition something like offside or handball can be ignored? It's an interesting approach but I can't see it being taken on officially.
It's also probably worth noting that the team Vinny captained were knocked out of the Champions League more than once due to some interesting refereeing decisions but I guess that was OK as we spent about £20m more on players than Liverpool. I'm sure Real Madrid had spent more than us when we've played them though so maybe we should have been the team allowed to ignore the rules and they should have just been levels above us to overcome this.

Attwell has to be the worse ref in the premier league like a rabbit caught in the heads he just frozen on the hand ball decision VAR dug him out of a massive hole just another corrupt official
I am not one who believes that all referees are out to get us. Lots of them make blunders. But it was Atwell who overuled his linesman to allow the goal by Fernandez at the Old Trafford Derby in 2023 after Rashford had shielded the ball while blatantly offside for at least 20 yards and then impeded Ederson. I was in the stadium and am certain it was a dishonest decision. I had a good view of it and so did thousands of people. The reaction from the crowd, including United fans, said it all. That decison on Saturday was another dishonest one. I have been watching football live for almost 60 years and have only seen a handful of obviously bent decisons. I don't believe for one moment that Atwell is merely incompetent. How did someone who is a laughing stock with rival fans across the country get the FA Cup Final gig for starters?

And where exactly would the world find out if we kicked up a stink? Everything is in the hands of the media.
