Bernardo Silva: “Something has to change. You learn who you can go to war with, first of all"

Saw a comment from Bernard yest, I wonder which players he means as I dont think anyone hasnt tried, they have either been too shit or too old in my eyes?

Was Pep involved in the new signings?
Why would they not play after all that money spent?
Has anyone thought he might have meant kovacic, to not start a cup final cos you dont feel perfect seems a big stretch

Ruthless Pep got a bit mellow in his 50’s and showed a bit too much loyalty to some, it’s widely accepted & acknowledged. The problems have surfaced when that loyalty wasn’t repaid by certain players, some of it covered on this thread. What we’re seeing now is a reaction to that, Pep has the receipts but is still scrambling round to solve said issues, which won’t happen overnight. Pep also has his right hand men in the squad, one of whom fucked off mid season, the rest (we all know who they are) we should be backing 1000% to get us through this period, not turning on em, I genuinely think some people are revelling in what’s happening just to say I told you so….ridiculous
Not being a smart arse but which players do you think Bernard means?

Crossed my mind. I remembered the CL final when Walker was left out but responded brilliantly, and wondered who 'may' have been disappointed not to start on Saturday. Was surprised that Kovacic and McAtee weren't on the bench at least, so I wonder if there was a poor reaction there.

Not that I'd necessarily blame them. Everyone wants to play in the big games. Still feels like there l's probably more to it than just that.

Since the kitman left bluemoon has really dropped its standards.

I've personally criticized Silva a lot this season as his short passing and creative input hasn't been good enough in my opinion. He does put himself about and I do love his little mean streak and he has been a fantastic player over the years for us. I think he's earned the right to have an opinion and air it.

Ironically I think his main issue this season is trying to do too much. I'm tired of seeing him come deep, get the ball off the centre half and make the pass the centre half could make. He needs to be much higher up the pitch. I know he got a lot of praise for the Chelsea game and helping out Khusanov but I think K had recovered pretty quickly from his bad start.

Anyway he's done my head in but I think he's been victim to the crisis we had, everyone got the jitters, we had no defence, everyone is taking too many touches and our creators have suffered all year. I suspect he's either calling out the guys who are saying they aren't available OR there's a bunch of mards in the team complaining about other people rather than getting their game together. This has led to Silva having to take responsibility in the wrong half of the pitch meaning he isn't able to take it in the opposition half. So in that respect I'd say I've probably been too hard on him even though he has frustrated the life out of me. He's probably now the player out of KdB, Gundogan and Kovacic i would want to keep around next year.

I personally can't wait for the season to end in the hope we can get over the trauma of that crisis period where we were losing leads and throwing away games. I feel like it's when a players done his ACL and is coming back from that - everyone just needs to get their nerve back together

Him coming deep is by design and because Rodri is out. He's got enough game intelligence and engine to do it, but it's not ideal for him. That he's having to do it in games like this says that Gonzalez hasn't hit the ground running - that may just be a normal adjustment period for him, or it may be more. I expect the club had 'hoped' he'd be ready for these games quickly, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

BTW I like that he's come out and said what he's said. I've felt there were players hiding when we were in possession all season, they all need to stand up and act like City players or leave.

You can't make a statement like "it’s widely accepted & acknowledged" without elaborating on who has acknowledged this.

I don't think Pep has gone soft at all. I think the glue that bonded our footballing exec has worn over the years.

In the past there seemed to be a well oiled process for bringing in new players (everyone knew there'd be a season to bed in, but then usually they'd become a seamless cog in the machine).

But over the past few years that process seems to have broken, our whole onboarding process, from getting the players we actual want, to having good alternatives when we don't, to integrating them into the squad and team. It all seems a bit less organised and structured now. Txiki Begiristain leaving is symptomatic if these problems for me.

For me, this has impacted Pep massively, where he used to have a library of 'Pep style' players to select off the shelf, now he has a selection of good players, but who don't all look like 'city' players.

Some would argue that Pep is a part of that exec team so it's partly his fault, I agree. Some would argue that Pep should adapt his own style to cater for these players, transform himself maybe. But whatever you say, I don't think "he's gone soft" can be one of them.

Ah the "I told you so" nah nah ne nah nah jibe.
Maybe they just got it right at the time.
Nobody is revelling in this.
Haha! (It wasn’t that) there isn’t a single person on this forum that knows better than Pep, that’s in a better position to understand what is going on, and qualified to rectify it. He’s not beyond reproach or critique, but he has all the ‘facts’ it’s funny people choose to believe Khaldoon when he says that. Happy for you to point out what people where right about that isn’t guesswork, with some genuine first hand knowledge

Well Bernardo, this season you are one of the last players I would go to war with too. You are not alone of course but people in glass houses and all that.

“You learn a lot of new things,” said Silva. “In the bad moments you learn new things. Who you can go to war with, first of all. Because it's in the bad moments that you see who the real ones are. And a lot of things that were good for us to not take things for granted, for our fans, for the club. And yeah, don't lower our standards.”
“I know we've got people used to winning every year,” said Silva. “And people demand this team to win every year. Football is a tough sport and it's not easy to beat these teams, especially in the Premier League. Like today, this team has a lot of individual quality. If you go and look around teams in the Premier League, all of them have two, three players that are unbelievable players. Our level needs to be very, very high to be champions again. And that's the level that we want to reach again.”
“It's a really, really bad season for us,” he said. “Something has to change next year. It's for the big bosses to decide. I have my opinion but definitely something needs to change when you don't perform at this level.”

I don't see it as much more than a call for the whole club to fight to get back to the top.
He, like most of us, is frustrated that we are not at the level we were. He will be frustrated with himself, and at the board for releasing his comrade, KDB.

Bernardo knows what is coming this summer and is obviously upset that he could potentially be told to find a new club. We are a very loyal club, but we're also ruthless (as evidenced by the release of KDB). The 'big bosses' are here to win and a season like this one will be deemed unacceptable and there will be radical changes made to the core of the squad. Also obviously a big fuck you to our record signing turned bloated training cone.

Very gracious.
Carry on with big blue obsequiousness.
Er.... I mean getting behind the club, of course.

Sorry - but feelings running high - not over this latest debacle. The more the club take your approach - Pep as a deity - I fear we'll never put it right.

Pep has alluded to this in the past, and it’s been discussed widely on here & socials, I’m not saying he’s gone soft, that’s a different thing all together, his approach has mellowed and one or two may of seen that as a weakness (their mistake)

Not sure I agree with the club being ruthless, there is an argument that several of the spine of the first team including KDB and Bernardo should have been moved on last summer, the warning signs were there.

And traffic cones are more useful than that Brumie lump.

You think it’s blind faith to believe in Pep ?
W-O-W ! Or I’m a happy clapper for believing he will get it right, I wasn’t on the forum during Pep’s first season, but I reckon there was a fair bit of this
