Referees’ Performances | 2024/2025

It’s the second option, with Palace being the underdog they bottled it with some mealy mouthed excuse about the ball direction or some bollocks

If that was at the other end , Ortega is sent off without a moments hesitation
AS for the commentary:- Alan Shearer said the ball was going away from goal anyway and Lee Dixon was addiment the Bernardo foul wasn't a penalty. We will never have fairness while these wankers are brainwashing the watching millions.

They’re right. The original decision from Shatwell was terrible, the VAR decision was terrible and the PIGMOL statement to justify it was utterly laughable. We should be making a noise about it because legitimate criticism is the only way this improves, and the ref’s body shouldn’t be allowed to get away with their own completely embarrassing justification.
But Gallagher didn’t address the question Warnock rightly asked. “How could 2 people on the VAR team not see what everyone else could see?”

But it’s ok as these things even themselves out over a season is usually what we get told, there needs to be an investigation and honestly those in the VAR booth sacked, but nothing will happen as it’s City and we are seen as cheats and it’s good for the game the underdog wins ..

There are no stupid questions. Handball by the keeper outside the box is not an automatic red card. The keeper has to be stopping a goalscoring situation for it to be red.
I did a game at Barrow and the away team cleared their lines. The Barrow keeper was about 5 yards outside his box and, basically, lost his bearings and just caught the ball. Yellow card and free kick as there wasn't another single player in that half of the pitch. Also ball not travelling goalwards.
Assessor told me I should have given a red. When I got his report I appealed to the FA and they agreed with me and the assessor was sent for re training.

It's one of those pieces of enduring received wisdom that people get wrong.

I remember that I thought it was a long time ago!

City should insist that none of this cup refereeing team should ever officiate a City match again.

Neither Atwell or Cann were predominately to blame (the former I don’t think was to blame at all).

Jarred Gillet is the main one to blame who made the wrong decision.
Attwell is the worst referee out of the current crop IMO but I agree he wasn't to blame this time.
Cann on the other hand was a key part of the decision making process, he was Assistant VAR and there's no way he didn't have a key role in coming to a ridiculous decision that just happened to benefit his old club.

The assistant VAR shouldn’t have any role in the decision making process.

Don't be stupid. Of course it is. If not, what does he do?

This -

  • watching the television footage while the VAR is busy with a 'check' or a 'review'
  • keeping a record of VAR-related incidents and any communication or technology problems
  • assisting the VAR's communication with the referee, especially communicating with the referee when the VAR is undertaking a 'check'/'review' e.g. to tell the referee to 'stop play' or 'delay the restart' etc.
  • recording time 'lost' when play is delayed for a 'check' or a 'review'
  • communicating information about a VAR-related decision to relevant parties

The VAR referee is the one that makes the decisions.

If you think he has no input I believe in the tooth fairy

In reality nobody knows what the fuck goes on in the VAR room.
I’d like to think it’s all very professional with no outside influence or bias but the evidence is that it’s not like that all.
I’m not saying they set out to fuck City over, although that wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest, but I reckon they just didn’t have the balls to send a goalkeeper off and be accused of ruining the game as a spectacle. So they chose to find a way of keeping him on the field and gaslight everyone about why that decision was made. Everybody who ever watched a game of football knows that was a red card, but the VAR didn’t want the heat. It fucking stinks and for me just proves that VAR is not fit for purpose.

One thing that really annoys me is this "sending Henderson have would have spoilt the game".

Its just total bollocks - So fucking what !!! - it was Henderson's decision to swat the ball away and as such he is the only one risking "spoiling the game and thereby diminishing Palace's chances at the same time.

All we want is for games to be referred / VAR'd correctly by applying the laws of the game and this just isn't happening. Far too many examples to mention but Saturdays was right up there with the worst decisions to ever come out of VAR. Instead of just the Ref's opinion its now a subjective committee involved - its a farce.

Not sure the Ref could see the incident clearly, but where the fuck was the lines man / person? it wasn't just outside the box - it was a good yard outside

It then goes to VAR and then to fuck with the ridiculous reasons / excuse as to why no red card.

Either the VAR officials are wholly incompetent and as such should never be involved with VAR again, or its corruption in plain sight. My money is on the latter.

The club should speak up about this, not least for the sake of the 1000's of blues there on Saturday spending their hard earned supporting the Team and club and the rest of us watching the game on the box.

Hi Richard, I've not read all the thread but what was your opinion of the decision on Saturday? I'll invite @Vic to answer as well, as he is also a qualified referee.

He clearly doesn’t have as much input as some are trying to suggest on here.

It’s bad enough that Gillett came to the decision he did.
Be interesting to found out why he wasn’t allowed to be involved in the semi final.
If he wasn’t allowed to be part of the on field team I’m sure they could have swapped him with the var assistant.
