This season under Pep, we have employed the “needs must” philosophy, which has sapped the creativity out of the team and created a deep level of need to maintain possession, avoid counterattacks, and restrict opposition chances. The change in the form of Grealish and Foden has nothing to do with Pep. Foden developed under Pep
We don't have world class midfielders, or at least Rodri is injured, Foden is out of form, and KDB's career is old.
Sadly, we have been on a “1 shot, 1 goal” tear all season and had to comeback from behind more games than I can remember after being sucker punched. We have become a team that others not only do not generate fear in opponents, but give them hope that if they can maintain their rearguard action, they can make substitutions late in the game in an effort to attack us.
Conversely, Pep has chosen a “this is my team until we are 3 up with 15 to go, when I might make a substitution that requires me to shuffle 3 players into different positions” approach. Not only has this stifled potential academy throughput, but it has given some players extended periods on the bench when they think they not only should be playing but are better than what is on show!
