Transfers that almost happened but didn't

The Wirtz transfer saga is an interesting one - because as of now we really don't know happened and why were his parents in Manchester.
This intrigued me to discuss some of such transfers and why they didn't happen. Something you have read somewhere 5 years after the incident or some ITK stuff that never came out.
For example -

Sanchez - Was it really that the rags came and doubled his salary or it was something else. He was almost ready to join City
Dani Alves- He went to a wedding with Messi and he told him to come to PSG
Ronaldo - Did Ferguson really called CR7 in the middle of the flight and he went to Old Trafford instead
Jorginho - Sarri and his agent dupped us as he said yes to us and then both moved to Chelsea from Napoli
Messi- Was Messi really coming to City and then something changed and we went for Grealish

Alves was more likely Neymar than Messi considering Messi was still at Barcelona then!

For both of these I had information from someone closely involved in the proceedings and both had the contracts agreed, on the table ready to sign. Then there was a last-minute demand for additional payments, which we refused to make.

We now know that Hazard's team did the same thing at Chelsea, who allegedly acquiesced and paid the additional amount under the table, via an offshore account.

Pep - Pearce ball turned him off

Ugo Ehiogu - had a couple of bids rejected if I remember, summer after going up under Royle.

Imagine Hazard, KDB and Aguero in the same team

Had inside information on that one as well and it was never happening! There was a plot at united to raise the wage ceiling and his camp approached us, basically to get an offer they could use as leverage with the Glazers.

We smelled a rat and asked for a written transfer request as evidence but of course we never got that, as there never was one. Chelsea did fall for it, and put a contract worth £160k a week on the table, which is exactly what Rooney's agent was hoping for. He then immediately got Gill to go back to the Glazers, who caved in and doubled Rooney's basic salary from £90k to £180k a week.

Reiziger was close but turned us down, same with Effenberg when we just got back to premier.
The time we missed out in Mido our striking targets billy sharp and Izzy mc leod.
Earlier years we came close to getting Christian dailly from Scotland, and also had links to the wonderful zander diamond.

A mixed bag of crap

Think we signed Keith Gillespie twice, lol.

Also remember us being linked with Peter Crouch and Andy Johnson around the time of Pearce's sacking. Johnson went to Fulham and Crouch joined Portsmouth instead about a year later. Seem to remember us being linked with Allardyce to take over. Thank god for Sven.

I remember being gutted that while we were in third tier Craig Hignett turned us down for Barnsley. Not sure how close that one was.
