It's not really a surprise that he's probably leaving us. We don't know what's gone on behind the scenes but it looks like Pep seems to have decided to cut him off, so his time here is done.

I wish him well wherever he ends up going. He should try and sort the drinking out though as it looks like when he goes out he doesn't have much of an off switch.

He was excellent in the treble winning season and he is without a doubt a talented footballer. However, injuries this season have n't helped and it is quite evident that Pep doesn't trust him anymore so a transfer is probably the best option.

Talented player and a likeable and seemingly kind lad. Wanted him to smash it but I just don’t think he has the drive, the single mindedness and ferocious ambition needed. He has the talent but isn’t all about football and at the top level that matters. He hasn’t helped himself and hasn’t been well advised which has allowed a narrative to build. Right time to move on. Will always be one that got away.

If my maths is right he has a net book value of £20m, so if we can get above that it's profit and I wish him well to relaunch his career somewhere else.

I make it a net book value of £33m. £100m over 6 years and before the 5 year amortisation cut off was announced.

Probably on £15m-£16m a year wages too.

So can't see us profiting but freeing up the wages and space in the squad is probably required.

Admittedly I wanted him to stay for one more season but he was living on borrowed time in January andwe did give him one more crack rather than moving him on in that window. Wasn't worth what Villa valued him at and he was patchy but he did chip in, especially in the treble winning season.

He was never good enough to be a £100m player. I do wonder how much better he could have been if he didn’t break down so often and also had a bit more confidence to fit in. If we can get £30m for him then take it and run.

Agreed. Nowhere near the quality of a 100 million pound player. Poor in front of goal and his final ball often lets him down in the final third. Never really shown these qualities at Villa so I was surprised at our interest.

Didn't want us to sign him at the time as I believed he'd be compromising Phil's game time. Especially at that silly price. Paying that kind of money you are almost obliged to stick him in the 11 regardless of form.
