Grealish left out of the CWC squad (pg34)

typical example of a player who thought he’d made it, just not got the elite level mentality
Most people around him seem to think it's the opposite and his problem is that he struggled to work under the pressures of his fee, his responsibility, and never felt like he belonged at this level, etc.

Rodri and Dias... Character..?

Rodri is a nice, clever lad who looks like he only drinks iced water and his mum still drives him to matches. Dias is a whinging fanny whose head has been swelled by a bit of reflected fame with Stormzy's ex.

They're not 'characters', they're grown-up milk monitors.
Not any different to outgoing Grealish in terms of characeter. Especially Rodri who we have really missed and has proved that he could really step up when needed.

The elite professionals look after the small details. He's paid elite wages and is far far from that level. He can't be counted on to stay fit enough. His trips to pubs and bars during the season are poorly timed. New dad too, so surely a good time to change old habits? Last out of Kev's party midweek and looked sozzled. He's got issues with drink he may never be able to solve.. just hope he gets away from it for the sake of himself and his family.

City fans have always loved a scapegoat. Always. Big Joe's first spell in goal for us, Edghill, Sterling (as you say), Mahrez (the "FFS" wasn't just banter originally). This season? How long have you got? It's one of our less desirable traits as a fanbase.
Early Big Joe was a joke but look how he transformed himself and became a magnificent goalkeeper, for that he won universal praise and rightly so.

Think what you like about Jack, we'll have a blander squad when he leaves.

All the real 'colourful characters' are gradually drifting away or have been whittled out of the club. I reckon there's only Bernardo left who has any real personality after Jack leaves.

It's a shame. The game could do with a few more Mario types to liven things up.

it’s a personal thing but I like my ‘colourful characters’ to be ‘colourful’on the pitch not in the papers.

Aguero, KDB etc kept a low profile off the pitch but certainly entertained on it.

Where as Jack and his fear of shooting have provided limited entertainment on the pitch but I’m sure he would be good company on a night out.

I think as a club we prioritise the former. It’s a professional sport nowadays, and to stay at the top you have to behave accordingly.

Every fanbase is the same. We're not unique in this regard.

We haven't scapegoated Jack, and we certainly don't hate him. He's taking 300k a week off the club and he's effectively phoned it in for two full seasons; many of his omissions come down to his own off-field habits, that much should be obvious to everyone by now. The Viking gave an interview the other day about how his first duty should be to look after his body, that this dedication should be the least expected of you when you're being paid vast amounts of money to play a sport. If Jack had this attitude, it wouldn't be ending like this. The fans have every right to call this out and be disappointed.

Somebody said in a previous post he was a vanity project and I'd agree with that. It seemed an unusual transfer at the time, more a case of us sticking two fingers up at those that said we were incapable of securing the big names, and it's proven to be so. It's infuriating that the one time we have gone big it's ended so poorly.

A shame. Such a nice guy and seemed proper happy to be joining city. Just hadn’t quite worked out as everyone would have liked.
I was hoping to see a bit of him in the middle to see if he could work there as our wide he just doesn’t have the pace of even technical ability of say mahrez.

Wish him well with his next move.

Part of me also thinks behind the jack the lad persona there are issues that he is hiding.

It’s easy to forget his sister had cerebral palsy and he was 4 when his brother died at a young age . That must have an effect on him and just because he earned millions doesn’t stop the internal pain and struggles he may be going through.

Would be nice if we just wished him well and moved on rather than cast shade on the lad.

No but it's completely stupid of the uninitiated naysayers to fail to realise the contribution made by a hugely successful player, who's had a hugely successful time at the club, because he doesn't play in the very simplistic way that they want him to.

We faced a low block most weeks during Jack's first 3 seasons at the club, league title winning seasons where we passed teams to death thanks in part to Jack's ability to protect the ball.
Except that I haven’t failed to recognize his contributions to those seasons.
And that’s not what I was responding to.
One of our players has gone from being one of the first names on the team sheet to being a peripheral figure who has barely kicked a ball lately.

The whole point of a forum is to discuss stuff like this. If people (not me I might add) are trying to make sense of what’s happened by highlighting a player’s deficiencies then it doesn’t make them stupid even if you see things differently.

Anyway, it’s a shame if he is leaving and I wish him well if he does move on.

I suppose what it means by ‘casting shade’. I think when a player, costing so much money and wages, has been largely ineffective for such a long period of time, left out of the squad for the last game, the reasons behind it will be discussed.

There are questions about his lifestyle and the questions are based on the behaviour we have seen, played out in the media, over the last few years.

I don’t wish the lad any malice at all, but I think it’s fair to discuss the probably reasons for his departure and the probable reasons he has been less than effective for such a long period.

Apologies If I have misunderstood the inference in your post and your referring to more vitriolic posts I’ve not viewed.

No doubt he’s a lovely lad but like so many who get success when too young he has his demons.
His private life is far too public and he definitely has a problem with alcohol having witnessed it personally.
Real shame as he is brilliantly talented.
I am really sorry if this is the end for him at City and pray it’s not the start of a really slippery slope for him as it has been for far too many talented footballers.

By all accounts a wonderful kind hearted fella who I’ve enjoyed watching at times but as a player he sadly lacks an end product.

Wish him well for the rest of his career.

Seems like a very troubled young man, I really hope he gets the help and support he needs to beat his alcohol issues, I guess Pep as many others were hoping having a baby would help, it hasn’t, time for him to move on , Pep needs to set an example to the squad that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated at our club , support him on that 100%

Even this season?!
Yes

Doku is more aggressive when attacking the box, creates more against packed defences, can beat a man and when he actually gets in front of goal he is a better finisher -
Marmoush can actually play from that left side as well.
Oreilly going down the left from fullback is more an effective attacker than Grealish - and Gvardiol is better down that side as well

Id actually love to see Sav operate from that side but Doku is less affective on the right

It may hurt some people but Grealish isnt as good as the hype ever suggested....he was never a great attacking threat even for Villa when he supposedly had more freedom - it was a weird transfer to do and one I believe the club are now wary of repeating in the future. Grealish came with celebrity status and lifestyle which brings in shirt sales, sponsorships etc etc so great in that aspect....unfortunately that didnt translate to consistent effective performances on the pitch which has to be the main focus.
When Beckham got too big - the old piss can got rid of him - his celebrity status got in the way

To be fair being remanded in prison is a fair excuse for missing a season or two.

Mendy was over 2x shitter a signing as Grealish.

Marmite?

There’s so much insinuation about Grealish, he’s spotted every now and then bladdered but podcasts and journalists will say there’s more to come out (you’d think they’d be open with it if there’s photos and videos of him stumbling all over the place drunk and that’s the only issue)

He does seem to have very positive PR in the press from his agents Stellar( all the stuff about the Germany squad being shocked he was out of the euros was comical) so I wonder if they are constantly pushing outlets not to release stories. Then there’s the photos of him at summer training camps every year.

I’m very interested to see it there’s more to it than
- not training well
- turning up in poor condition due to drinking
- public infidelities affecting his home life and being brought into work
And what will come out in the wash when he does go.

I’d imagine there will be all sorts of stories over the summer from his side about not being trusted by Pep, not being given the freedom etc over the summer as he looks for a new club.

He’s a likeable guy with all his interactions with disabled supporters and buying into the fan culture but it does make him seem more like a young lad at an away game than a dedicated professional.

On the pitch he’s been so disappointing too, played within himself all the time even at his peak.
