Season Summary - 2024/25

If finishing trophiless but third in the Premier League a shit season, then I'm very pleased to be a City supporter.

I'm old enough to remember being 3-0 up at half time against Bournemouth and letting them finish the game as a draw (this is always the 'misery' game that sticks in my mind from my seat in J Block).

I remember us suffering humiliation in the third flight while the Traffordians won everything - my mates at the time rubbed it in and then some.

Back then, finishing third in the top flight would have been a dream finish to any season. Let's not be all spoilt by our successes.
If the rags had won the Charity Shield - you can be sure they would not be describing themselves as 'trophylesss"

:-)

So WE DID WIN A CUP!!!

Free pass for me this season.

The stress of 4 years of "must win" games took its inevitable toll.

4 years chasing titles/doubles/trebles and Champions League success took its toll on the pitch, on the coaching staff and in the stadium.

4 years of flogging players to death, with over 50 games a season, took its toll with key injuries to key players.

4 years of our fans travelling all over Europe, following our Club inevitably going deep into all competitions, at ever increasing cost, took its toll.

So, written off and we go again.

The challenge to win back the PL trophy and take on Europe has been set. The jeopardy will lift the atmosphere, as seen recently at home. Our away fans will do the job as we always do. The players will get their hunger back with fresh faces and the returns from injury. A new legacy to chase.

Bring it fucking on.

Up the fucking Blues.
Well said.

I always thought that JP goal was unique and was pleased to have witnessed it from my seat in the Kippax ;). However I’m sure there was a similar one I have seen on YouTube recently , may have been when Leeds won at Sheff Utd in 92.
Edit

Our players need a good long, refreshing break. For goodness sake let them have it. They are exhausted!
Sorry sir - there's the "Does anyone give a fuck CWC", so a refreshing break isn't on the agenda.
More on point - if you'd suggested we'd finish 3rd at Christmas I'd have snapped your hand off.
It's been a difficult season by our recent standards - prior to 2011 it's fuckin dream world level.
Let's get back to challenging next year and see where we go

It's felt very dodgy at times . Those games in November and December , we all know which ones , were like a flashback to some particularly poor performances through the eighties and nineties , we all know which ones. And I agree the 1989 Bournemouth draw was up there with the worst .

At times I felt like we'd jumped off the Champions Hot Air Balloon , having enjoyed the view for four seasons , without a parachute or a reserve just for fun , specially when team after team scored on their first attack simply by putting ten men behind the ball then countering.

Teams were more than happy to see us advance up the pitch in Full Pep Player in Every Section Formation , doodle around on the wings with little prospect of an effective cross and let the ball go out for a goal kick after a les than inspiring attack . It could get very boring and predictable

The signings we made and our youngsters , albeit played out of necessity , really made the difference and I hope they continue to improve . Nunez has finally stopped looking lackadaisical and shown some talent out of position and Kova proved to be forward thinking but with a defensive bite AKA strong in the tackle , but needed someone alongside him. to cover his masy runs forward, as he has no pace . No idea why Grealish has been sidelined . His performance at home against Forest was majestical but he's not been given the opportunity to make the midfield , or anywhere else , his own

Best goal for release of tension was against Arsenal at home in the dying seconds and Harland's mischief or perhaps Stones' one against Wolves and Bernie's mischief . Most important was Nunez against Villa. Best away trip Ipswich , great fun and old school stand and Tottenham, which felt like a turning point after loosing twice to them .

I'm happy with our final position , not bothered about the FA Cup as it's a lottery , apart from That Handball Decision, but not so with our woeful performances against Rags in the league which began with the embarrassment at Wembley a year ago . Thank goodness for Tottenham , something I never thought I'd be glad to say. The CL exit is what saved our season, as we could rest some aging legs and maybe Pep could coach some new moves .

Let's hope Foden regains form , Oscar Bobb stays fit and Rodri gets up to speed . No idea about signings except to say we need some , three at a minimum . Oh and please play Gvardiol in the centre . Please Pep .

yes european coaches take these "supercups" seriously

but no self respecting fan is going to claim the charity shield as a trophy worth mentioning alongside the title/champs/FA cup/League cup

we have had a trophyless season and you know it doesn't matter that we did

A few year’s ago Noel Gallagher said “you just want to be proud of your club”.

Nothing to be ashamed of this season at all.

Big drop off from past 4 seasons not to be unexpected especially with the injuries mental and physical fatigue, decent outcome though.
City support at home decent, away support excellent

After what has felt like an abysmal season I'll happily accept finishing 3rd and getting to a cup final as a bad year. Been wanting this to end since November - onwards and upwards.
would have been a good season if pep didn’t overthink the fa cup as top an s cup would have been great but just good lessons have been learned from this season going into next season. Sad to see Kev go but next season we need to build round Haaland .

Personally I'm fairly upbeat about our team and manager generally and third place and a cup final doesn't sound too bad.

Those bald facts disguise what was a very disappointing performance when compared with all our recent seasons even the non title winning ones.

Our champions league performances were very poor indeed.
From November onwards we were never threatening to give Liverpool any competition to retain our title.
The FA cup run hardly contained the most challenging fixtures.

Clearly injuries, fatigue and a squad that had changed little caught up.
Our later run of results shows that there is spirit in the squad even if the actual performances save a few were a bit lacklustre.

We need a rest and some fresh faces, out attackers are very young and there is lots of potential for improvement. Let's hope we can recruit well in the areas that need it with a bit more stability at fullback and energy and creativity in midfield.

You either win something or you don't

A 5/10 season for me, yet we still finished third and reached a cup final (and won a trophy, if you’re that way inclined). Shows the levels we’ve become accustomed to. Raring to go again next season with a squad revamp.

so what did we win then? It's a completion that you can only enter if you've won FA cup or PL. I will continue to believe we won a trophy - especially as it was against the rags - or was I dreaming??

Good start, very bad middle and good end.

If we won the cup it would be a very good season.

Not bad overall, the football could be better but reminds me of 16/17 and we know what happened after that season....

One to forget and that won’t take long.

Fair play to the players and pep for making it into the champions league. That money is important for quick rebuild.

The FA cup robbery won’t be forgotten even if we did not play our best game and palace did what they had to do.

The disjointed displays can’t disappear quick enough. I really hope that’s the end of us being cut open so easily at the back.

Overall tho it will be the season Rodri got injured and Kev left.

next…
