As someone who doesn't rate the fullback position, i find Ait Nouri to be the perfect prototype. He is the new Marcelo. Immensely skillful and athletic.

Defensively, i find most fullbacks are pretty similar, average! With a few exceptions. Walker at his peak, Wan Bissaka at his peak and then some CB types who also play LB tend to be good defensively. Everyone else tend to either be average or Trent Arnold bad, defensively.

So the best full backs are those who are the most technically gifted on the ball and okay defensively. And Nouri simply is amongst the most gifted.

He'd be #1 choice for me. At least hed have a chance against O'Reilly. Most of these other guys won't.
He wouldn’t be my first choice, but I love how technically gifted he is — able to dribble out of trouble, handle a high press with ease, and stay composed under pressure.

He's better than Kerkez imo...let's compare.

Ait-Nouri - 4 goals, 7 assists, 86.7% pass completion, 46 chances completed, 89 tackles, 26 interceptions, 66 clearances, 55 take ons, 22/52 aerial duels won

Kerkez - 2 goals, 5 assists, 80.4% pass completion, 36 chances created, 52 tackles, 45 interceptions, 99 clearances, 22 take ons, 28/77 aerial duels won

Very good going forward and can defend. Got a bit of Marcelo about him in that he's incredibly skillful for a fullback, can shoot and cross. The ball retention and ball carrying means he would be suited to inverting too.
We should really be comparing him to Gvardiol tbh. Yes, I know he's supposed to be a CB long term, but he's spent most of the year as a LB.

I am concerned Gaughan mentioned 1 full back. It better be a RB. Don't see where a LB fits in. We have Gvardiol, O Reilly, Ake, maybe even Lewis.
Still Dias, Stones, Khusanov, Reis, Akanji for CB.

We need a RB, not sure we need this guy.

"Wan Bissaka", come on mate.

He pretty much locked down Sterling every single time they were against each other. He was a very good defensive fullback at his peak. Odd that he's been pushed up this season at West Ham

A left back in more important because OReilly isn't one
Gvardiol needs to now be in his natural CB position
Lewis is a Right Back
Ake is injury prone

We need both full back postions filled, not carry on with make shift ones

Not for me, he was dogshite at covering the far post on crosses, just relied on his speed to defend one on one, Walker was similiar one on one but was great at all aspects of defending barring the odd brainfart.

Definitely didn't just depend on speed, he smothered Sterling - he was a good defender, crap on the ball. Walker was also notoriously crap at defending the far post at crosses

Not earth shattering but hes always had huge potential, just a matter of getting him in to a Pep team build..

In his later years yes but Walker was better in his prime at defending crosses or at least that's what I remember, and Sterling was dogshite at every single Manchester derby even before Wan Bissaka signed for them.

At his peak, he was one of the best defensive full backs in the Premier League. A lockdown Fullback. I know he played at United and we are supposed to pretend nothing good ever happened there... And i agree, nothing good ever did :p

But Bissaka before United and in his first year there was immense defensively. Offered you very little otherwise and got ran out quickly on thereafter.

Which supports my theory that being defensively great at full back is only a small part pf what's required. And often not the most important part.

Didn’t think we’d be in for a fullback but he’s looked decent for a while now. I’d say RB is of much more importance than LB though, especially if Ake’s staying.

Ake can't stay fit. He's played the equivalent of just over 7 PL game's this season, minutes wise.

People need to forget about him and Stones, they aren't suddenly going to be players who are available for the majority of games.

Didn’t think we would be in for a fullback ? Or do you mean a left back ? I was sure we would be looking at a fullback I wanted a left back but was certainly expecting a Rightback

Agree - sad as it is it is time for tough logical decisions. For me Ake and Stones ( nor Walker) can’t be part of the future plan. We also have issues where players are simply not good enough. Lewis, McAttee, Jack, Phillips, Eddie spring to mind. Then we have the ageing players. Bernie and Gundogan. Lots and lots to think about and to be sorted in the close season.
