Without commenting on the motivations of the driver, the whole episode reflects very poorly on modern life.
Firstly, whilst security around events like this has been rendered absolutely necessary because cars have been weaponised in recent years, there wouldn’t have been anything like the steps required yesterday in place at United’s parade in 1999, which was a much more innocent time - and notably before 9/11.
Then there’s the reaction of the people on the street to the car. Some of it justifiable and understandable given the horrific weaponisation of motor vehicles at public events in recent years, but some of it sadly representative of a more angry and violent society.
And then there’s dozens of people filming it and uploading it to various platforms. I fear social media and the tentacles of technology are slowly sending us all quite mad.
