After the season has ended, I wanted to say something positive about Matheus Nunes. Cup Final aside, Manchester City finished strongly. In the Premier League, we went on an unbeaten run winning 9 out of the last 12 league games, and I found myself increasingly thinking Nunes played well.

We signed Nunes 2 years ago from Wolves for £53m, and I never understood why. I wrote him off almost immediately. He had done very little for Wolves, and for about a season and a half he did very little for City. He would regularly play quite poorly, and gift possession away, a trait that culminated in the 'tackle' at the Etihad Derby this season.

Nunes has come back from the dead. He has 1 goal and 6 assists in 19 starts plus 7 sub. app. for City. That's decent. I am not claiming that he is a top quality player, but the way he is developing, he might become one. Nunes is deceptively quick, he can dribble , and make a good cross. The right back position suits him. At last he looks like he is enjoying football and that he wants the ball. I give him a lot of credit for coming back from a low point of the Etihad derby. He still has a habit of switching off and losing concentration but he is proving himself to be a very useful player. His form in the closing weeks has been such that I am now uncertain as to whether we need to buy a right back. The way he is going he could conceivably develop into a Premier League right back, at the very least he is a good squad player. I would be interested to see how he would play in midfield now that he is playing with some confidence.

The only other City player who you might argue has improved this season is Doku but if you look at Doku's goals and assists they are pretty much identical to the previous season.

Well played Nunes. I think Nunes can look back on his season with pride because he showed good character; his performances improved in an alien position, and in a side that was struggling emphasising the point.

My best young player was O'Reilly.
Best signing: Marmoush.
POTY: Haaland. Other candidates Gvardiol and Dias.

We definitely need a right back. He has huge lapses of both concentration and quality - even the late goal against Bournemouth came from his poor play.

The standards at the club are to compete for the title and champions league and unfortunately he’s no where near that level.

Has he improved? Maybe, but that doesn’t mean he’s good enough to start for City.

Even Kyle Walker at his superb City best had lapses in concentration and made mistakes that cost us goals. Nunes is still learning the position, he could be a very good right back.

Kyle Walker was the best right back in the world.

Nunes at right back wouldn’t even be top 10 in the division.

Spot on.

Consistency is an issue, but credit to Nunes for coming back from the blunders in the derby at the Etihad. Almost thought that Pep had written him off - and I was proven wrong.

Particularly enjoyed his assists, which have proven decisive to turn a couple of matches in our favour.

Which suggests Doku hasn't actually improved at all, then? I find he does a great job of looking threatening without actually providing a threat.

I agree on Nunes, though. Starting right back for a title chasing team? No. But he's not hidden, worked hard in an unfamiliar position, and had more good games at right back than bad. Decent assist stats and chipped in with a goal or two, most notably against Villa. His size and speed, in my opinion, make him a better option for second choice right back than Rico Lewis next season. I'd push Rico into a supporting midfield role as he's good on the ball, but doesn't have the speed or strength to be a top class right back.

Should have gone to specsavers!

Kova worth a mention. Always a solid player has added a shot to his armoury.
I was even thinking recently that if he had been available for the FA Cup Final we'd have won it.

I think Kovacic has come to the fore because Rodri was injured, and other midfielders struggled so that he became more important and valuable to us. I don't think we can say he has improved.

Without doubt. Nunes had a really good second half of the season.

Gvardiol is my POTS, by a mile!
Nunes is starting from a pretty low base and after gifting the Etihad derby to the rags, starting from the floor.
But credit to him that he’s done okay at RB and improved and scored possibly our most important goal this season.

Agree with most of what has been said. Credit to the guy for not letting his head drop. He has made a major contribution to our uptick in form.

Player of the season has to be Guardiol surely?
I saw that OPTA put Gvardiol in their team of the year. Definitely a strong shout. I would give it to Haaland. To score that number of goals when he had injuries and no supply line was some achievement.

For me Haaland has been too hot and cold. Too many games when he has almost been a passenger. I do wonder if he gets disheartened about the way he is manhandled in the box every game and I mean every game and wether that has started to impact his mobility in the box. It blows my mind how some of the attention is not given as a stone wall penalty. Can you imaging Salah being treated like that and the reaction. I wish the club would call in Webb to discuss and at least gain clarity of how this fits the LOTG.

Despite some brain farts himself, Guardiol has shown the more consistent performer and has shone when CB.

You know football.

Nunes passing and delivery aren't exactly his stronger attributes, which is concerning considering he's a midfielder by trade.

In reality, we'll look back at Nunes the same way we look back at players like Bony, Rodwell, Sinclair etc.

Probably Nunes but he went from definitely not good enough for us to someone still not good enough for us. So I'm hardly shouting from the rooftops about it.

And I say that as someone who thinks he's our best right back at the moment.

He might not be good enough as a RB but he’s a good right sided midfielder & contributes more than Savio at the moment.
