Right back options

Wharton feels like a redundant signing. For it to make real sense, we would’ve needed not to sign Nico. But with Nico already in the squad, adding Wharton doesn’t address the core issues in midfield.

Personally, I’d take Morgan Gibbs-White over Wharton—mainly because we have Nico and desperately need legs, pace, grit, tenacity and energy in the middle of the park. Without that grit, we’re still looking at a midfield that gets outrun. MGW might not be a prefered signing, and he’ll definitely be expensive, but he’s a necessary one.

If we didn’t have this homegrown HG quota issue, I wouldn’t even be considering him—but given the constraints, it makes complete sense why we’re looking at him.

As for right-back, Vanderson and Singo are my top picks. But again, the homegrown requirement shifts things. That’s why Livramento becomes not just a strong player, but also a necessary one—even if he’ll come at a premium, just like MGW.
Im still gonna disagree there.

Wharton is better than MGW for how im seeing the squad.

Wharton is a crazy good defender in midfield, better than MGW imo, while MGW is a good presser I dont think his qualities are elite enough in the final 3rd to be deemed as necessary.

While Wharton is elite at creating from the back and is more Rodri-like in this regard, I want more of that.

The other reason is that Cherki, and the return of Bobb makes MGW somewhat redundant to me as well.

MGW also comes into an attacking system that is plenty young.

Wharton has a 27 yr old Reijnders, 29 yr old Rodri, and 31 yr old Kova. That I deem as vastly more important to also lower the age in.

Livramento is still number 1 for me as well, but Wharton is miles ahead better for us than MGW imo.

I hear you, and I don’t doubt Wharton’s quality—but the reality is, the club seems to be targeting a presser and a proper engine in midfield.

I was raving about Neves last year—he looked like the perfect 6/8 hybrid: an engine, a runner, a presser, with all the whistles and bells you want in a modern midfielder. He would have been the perfect fit in my opinion.

But of course, it’s still early. The window just opened, and as we’ve seen before, City are more than capable of pulling something unexpected. Maybe we pivot to Wharton, or maybe someone completely off the radar walks through the door. Until then, MGW seems to be the one Viana and Pep have circled as the priority—even if he’s not the flashiest or technical, they see him as a fit for what they are envisioning.

Now that makes me nervous. Love our transfers so far but not getting a right back will be a huge mistake.

Right back, or Livramento specifically, isn’t getting done until well after the CWC. Not really heard anything about alternative options on our end and Newcastle haven’t come out and said he isn’t for sale or the fee would be well over 90m. We have the money and a couple players Newcastle would be interested in and they may need to sell someone for PSR apparently. Also probably quiet since we’re currently juggling the transfers of three players.

We've been linked with four but this is the one in play until we get a Fuck off.

I’ve interpreted those other links as “we’ll be in touch if Livramento falls through”. I could be well off but with how the club is going about the business already makes me think they’re trying to pull a Kyle Walker and put their balls on the table.

Speaking to Newcastle fans they don't think there is a PSR issue and if there were there are a dozen players they'd sell before Livramento.

Fair enough. I keep hearing they need to make some sales but nothing specific in terms of fees or how contracts and amortizations come into it. I don’t care to do math like that outside of my day job so I’ll take the experts’ words for it.

If we don't sign an association trained player then Stones ake will 100% stay and khusanov will go on loan. Which then means next season we will have to sign a bunch or we will be playing with 17 foreign spots foden and youth. Unless bobb takes an AT spot. But still we need to sign some and the best available to make our squad as strong as possible

Bobb is club trained.

probably a few. I hope we can get him but I wouldn't use PSR as a basis for building my hopes upo.
Yeah I think that's right. It will be some combination of the player pushing for it and us making them an offer they can't refuse if this one gets done

Maybe helping out with Grealish's wages if he goes there?

I know we don't do stop gaps, and I don't like stop gaps....but Ola Aina is making a lot of sense for a short term fix

28, arguably been the leagues best right back this year, only a year old this compact so available for below market value and importantly he's homegrown as he's a Chelsea graduate
He’s a good choice but we’d lose him, Air Nouri and Marmoush to AFCON in december

No PSR issue as in they don’t have to have to sell players like last summer but they are limited in what they can spend and offer wage wise. Thats a problem if they want to compete in the premier league and CL next season.
