Good Popular Bands That Never Did It For You

U2 and UB40 stand out. Whenever red red wine comes on in particular I genuinely have to leave the room. Oh, and simply fcuking red and jamiroquai.

Shed 7 are one whose success always surprised me. I saw them earlier on in their career live and they we're so so poor that the crowd started singing "stick your rainbows up your arse" as they launched into to their best known song chasing rainbows, and ended up doing less than twenty minutes before retreating off stage.

As a rock and metal head I confess I have struggled to get into Pantera over the years which is odd as they should be my thing.

Other than that, pretty much every indie band especially the newer ones, I don't even know them. If we're in the pub or wherever, and my mate pipes up "ah, class tune, it's the whoever's" then I genuiunely haven't got a clue and struggle to see what is making them musically attractive. It's not that I mind the sound, it's just that I don't know them or their music, and from the whines coming out of the speakers I have no desire to investigate them further. I could try to name a few well know current popular bands which I'm told are proper class but just sound like feedback and whining to me, and my mates would have a heart attack.

But variety is the spice of life. In a way I'd speculate that music has, much like video games and books, become so easy to access and to produce that there is a wave of new material daily which really makes it hard to separate the good from the average from the poor.

One of my mates is a huge Nickelback fan, don't mind them too much myself and they do come in for a fair bit of unjustified criticism, but I think this song says a lot about them, plus just makes me think of dfs sofas adverts

Have loved the Eagles music ever since I first heard them in the 70s ... Dire Straits aren't bad, but I can't say they really interest me all that much if I'm honest ...... I've never really liked Queens music, although i did once buy their album, Sheer Heart Attack, back in the early 70s, which turned out to be the only Queen record that i ever bought ....... am no fan of U2 either, dreary music, most of which has me yawning, or sends me to sleep ... its like listening to the wife droning on about shopping, or what goes on at her job!
I'm no lover of U2 at all, but that's some put down!

Ouch............. :-)

Kiss
Arctic Monkeys
Black Sabbath (Tommy Iommi was a great guitarist however)
Rush
The Beach Boys
Genesis (after Peter Gabriel left)
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Simply Red (Ginger twat)

What bands that are really popular and indeed good but could never quite click with you?

I have a couple that I just don't find interesting whilst the rest of the world really seem to love 'em

Dire Straits and the Eagles.... just don't float my boat at all.... in fact they torpedo it BELOW the water line... any advances?
Dire straits don’t float my boat other than brothers in arms . The video , lyrics and haunting guitar are stunning and thought provoking .
Only like one tune from the eagles thanks to the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy !!!

UB40 - how they have managed to make every song, even covers, sound exactly the same drives me mad.
Bob Marley - reggae is just an awful sound.
Genesis - up their own smug arses.
Coldplay - Genesis tribute band so see above ( oh, Chris Martin is a **** because he shagged Gwyneth Paltrow)
Ed Sheeran - in bred ginger twat.

Coldplay, apart from their debut album Parachutes (2000)
I can't stand Coldplay. A band of Radiohead wannabes who could never be. They're a good band though and I understand why they're so popular as they appease all those not really into proper meaningful music. I can't stand hearing Chris Martin warbling on to pop tunes, he grates on my nerves.

Oh yeah, someone has mentioned UB40. I'll put a vote down for them as well. Fucking horrendous. The only reason I didn't mention them initially is because OP stressed that our votes have to be for "good popular bands".

Guns & Roses, the Eagles, ELO - I don't like 'em, but I can appreciate the musicianship and talent. With UB40 I can't even appreciate them for what they are. They were good between 1979 and 1981 - 99% of what comes after is shite.

Any Rap band.

Grew up in the 60's and 70's. Love most pop music from that era - love disco, metal, and a lot of heavy metal. Love blues. I like a lot of Jazz and some Classical. But Rap - never did it for me - pretty much ever. I do like Beastie Boys though and Linkin Park songs that feature Rap. Other than that - I mostly do not like Rap.
