That doesn't really matter though, does it? Their bodies are their livelihood and their careers are short. I wouldn't be too enthused to play in what is a glorified friendly preseason tournament just for some assholes at FIFA or whatever other organization to get paid much more in comparison. Tickets aren't even being sold that well so it seems there isn't much of an appetite for it from a spectators' perspective.

Mid-season World Cup three seasons ago, a Euros/Copa America last summer and now this with a World Cup next summer is just too much. It's nice as a fan, but I sympathize with the players who are being run into the ground.

There once was a glorified tournament which is now the pinnacle of football trophies! Here is the teams that entered it! Madrid won it they took it seriously think they won it next two years too..

The first ever European Cup, which later became known as the UEFA Champions League, was held in the 1955-56 season. It was organized by UEFA and featured 16 teams from various European countries. Below is the list of teams that participated in the inaugural tournament:

- **Austria**: Rapid Wien
- **Belgium**: Anderlecht
- **Denmark**: AGF Aarhus
- **England**: No representative (English clubs did not participate in the first season)
- **France**: Reims
- **Hungary**: Vörös Lobogó (now MTK Budapest)
- **Italy**: AC Milan
- **Netherlands**: PSV Eindhoven
- **Poland**: Partizan Belgrade (competed as a representative of Yugoslavia)
- **Portugal**: Sporting CP
- **Romania**: No representative
- **Saarland**: Saarbrücken (Saarland was a protectorate at the time)
- **Scotland**: Hibernian
- **Spain**: Real Madrid
- **Sweden**: Djurgårdens IF
- **Switzerland**: Servette
- **West Germany**: Rot-Weiss Essen

**Key Notes**:
- Real Madrid won the first tournament, defeating Reims 4-3 in the final.
- The competition was initially a knockout tournament, unlike the modern group stage format.
- Some countries, like England, declined to participate due to domestic priorities or skepticism about the new competition.

If you need more details about the tournament or specific matches, let me know!

served his purpose, cash in before he has no value

might seem unfeeling but he declined at dortmund as seasons went on and you can see the same here.

Was there the same reaction when Rodri said there’s too many games and he needs a rest? Hmm

That was in general Akanji was talking about a pacific tournament where he basically says he ain't interested mustn't of read the room that we are defending champions and what Khaldoon spoke about this tournament and how when the season ended that then was the beginning of our new season!

Last 2/3 months he has hardly played. Personally think the club should tell him to go have a holiday see you start of next season!

Did you say the same when Rodri publicly expressed the same concerns?

I didn't think you did.

Akanji is absolutely spot on. Khaldoon only cares about the money, and Pep agrees with his paymasters.

CWC is a joke competition, just like its predecessor. Football is dead.

Ah yeah sorry. Silly me for thinking after being injured, he’d actually be looking forward to getting stuck in, easy minutes to get sharp for the season. I could understand it if he’d played 60 games this year, he hasn’t. Awful attitude.

Shouldnt be saying that in public. He has basically admitted that he wants to get get knocked out as early as possible so he can go on his jollies.

We should be trying to win this. Would be a great sharpener for the season ahead. Real build their club/brand off this type of stuff. If we want to be at tge top of the tree over the next decade and beyond this is the type of foundation we need.

Akanji was speaking general terms on behalf of any right thinking professional. As was Rodri last year. There's simply too much football

Yup there most probably is, any small gap is filled with playing time and commitments. I know they get paid a lot but still the saturation is relentless.

Rodri was making a statement about the demands on players due to the incessant club & international schedules.
£7m per year Akanji has specifically criticised the CWC tournament which he has known is on the schedule for the last 2 years and spoken for unnamed other City players not just himself and basically pissed all over team spirit prior to the tournament. Do you really think all the players don’t want to go? Rodri may see this tournament as a positive to build momentum prior to next season
If the reports are true Rayan Cherki is desperate to get his transfer done to play in the same tournament
If Akanji is tired and wanted to sit on a sun lounger for the summer he should have spoken to Pep not made this ill advised statement

Players have to work just as hard when they’re recuperating from injures.

Not quite sure how being injured is equivalent to having a holiday.

He probably would have been wiser to not make these comments, but players are getting fatigue injuries more frequently now and the timing of this competition means all the players of the teams involved will not get much of a break this year.
I work 12 hours a day, days and nights and rarely get a day off. Go home every day to cook my tea and also cleaning the house. I still manage to run 10k three times a week on top of that. I earn a small fraction to what Akanji earns. He retires at 35 ffs! I’ve got no sympathy for people who are earning £200k pw claiming they are tired for running around a football pitch, they are living the dream.

Before you say the are human, they get tired etc. I understand the frustrations of more football being played. But they’ve got the best job I could possibly think of. I’d love to know the mindset of the rest of the players at City. Apparently Haaland didn’t want to go on holiday, Pep had to tell him to go. That’s the mentality we want, not Akanji moaning that he’s got to play some football.

If your running started impacting your job, you’d think about doing something different.

Elite sport is not the same as working a 12 hour shift.

nah mate, its a little more complex. First of all Akanji has every right to give his opinion. Another thing is to put out the effort during tournament and nothing i seen from Akanji so far tells me he would not.

Its not comparable what You are doing sir and how much earns to the issue. Earnings of top footballers are high because of many factors. The competition is crazy for young people. They need to mature and put the hard work at training for years. They need to choose work and training over pleasures, friends, etc. The regime becomes increasingly strict from a younger and younger age. On top of that, around the age of 12–15, you have to significantly limit other activities, including education. At that point, it becomes a black-and-white choice — either I pursue the path of becoming a high-earning footballer, or I continue my education at a serious level. And what if, 3 to 6 years later, the footballer gets injured and can’t return to the sport? It’s not anyone’s fault, but the person ends up unable to be a footballer and also not particularly well-educated. It’s a difficult situation.

In short - maybe you working hard now because you were rather easy going when young and Manuel do not? Etc. There are many possibilities, but the point is the football players are right to earn their money and its not an argument to limit their freedom of speech in any way.

I agree with him.

Akanji making comments about schedule in September of 2024. And playing for us this past season while injured and hurting up until he couldn’t go anymore. And some City fans slag him off because he reiterated those previous comments about the schedule just as Pep has said and other players too, but hey Akanji doesn’t deserve to play at City because he said it! LOL!

Imagine if Grealish said it, his fanboys would agree with him.
