Some players just aren’t good enough any more. Or they can’t get the balance right between attacking and holding the ball. It’s also due to the fact that the midfield could hardly run this season so if anyone lost the ball they’d have to track back. If Cherki signs, and if he reproduces the form and skills he has shown, it will spell big trouble for Amorim and the Man Utd recruitment team given that Cherki played Man Utd twice in the Europa League last season. In the past, Man Utd signed Ronaldo after they played against him in a pre-season friendly. Then Man Utd were adept enough to act.

That can work both ways. In an average side a star can be the conduit for the team because the other players will look for him always whereas in a top side, the star player is one of a team.
