The first of many to come under Trumps second term I feel.

The National Guard will be deployed to Los Angeles after protests in response to immigration raids extended into a second day.

California Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed that the Trump administration is deploying "2,000 soldiers" to LA after local police used tear gas, stun guns, and riot shields to push back immigration protesters on Saturday.

Demonstrations began outside the Los Angeles Federal Building in the downtown area of LA on Friday after officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out raids in the area.

On Saturday, as many as 400 people had gathered to protest in Paramount, a city south of LA, the LA sheriff said. However, that number dropped to dozens later in the day.

Mr Newsom warned in a post on X: "The federal government is sowing chaos so they can have an excuse to escalate. That is not the way any civilized country behaves."

More troops than protesters at this point but whatever. There will be solidarity protests and they can't be everywhere at once.

As many as 400 people? We have bigger things going on at the local Wetherspoons.

I think that's the point, no need for the Federal government to do what they've done. It's testing the waters, putting a marker down, or some form of baiting etc.

The issue seems to be that the Federal government has unilaterally deployed the National Guard without the request/agreement of the Governor who is saying there's no need. Normally the National Guard is mobilised with consent of the Governor like during the Rodney King riots.

During his last term Trump was deterred from mobilising them a couple of times I think but was clear campaigning this time he would have no compunction doing it. I don't understand the legal niceties of this but it's strikes me there's plenty of opportunity for it to get messy, if not in this instance then as a precedent for a subsequent situation.

It's worth noting that he did not deploy any soldiers when his fascist army attacked The Capitol. This is designed to have them escalate this so he can declare martial law (or as they say it: marshall law). The other day the head of ICE warned about criticizing them and now we have this.

American troops are attacking Americans.

It’s happening faster than I expected

A thread titled US riots probably not the beat thing for you to click on.
But it IS. Just to highlight my obvious displeasure of our country's OBSESSION with all things Yank.

I'm sick and tired of American news being the first item on OUR news (this was, at 6 a.m.).

There'll've been riots in scores of countries, last night. No more or less important than those in UsA. So why is it the lead item?
