It needs to be a surprise to him, I think, in order to minimise the fallout.

Similar to Putin, I fear that Trump is so self-centred that should he sense his days are numbered, he wouldn't even consider the effects of his actions upon his own family - he'd be just as likely to manufacture a situation to 'justify' him pressing the button, which is bound to be on his power-crazed sicko bucket list.

I think getting rid of Trump under any circumstances can only be good.
The simple reason is that nobody knows what Trump will do next. This instability is working to his advantage.
He is so unhinged and petty, you cannot get a handle on him. Vance is much more predictable, so can be countered.
If Trump goes, it is all over...

Pretty easy to understand when over 50% of the voting age population have the reading comprehension of 6th Grade (11-12yo) or less. I'd argue that its a barely functioning education system.
